Customers are feeling “emotionally blackmailed” when being prompted to tip at self checkouts in restaurants and retail establishments, especially amid record-high inflation and less friendly customer service.
Business owners say prompts to leave a tip at self-checkout can significantly increase gratuities for staff, but more and more customers are asking what exactly these tips are for, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.

Uh, if you feel ‘emotionally blackmailed’ by that then you need help.
Just push 0%.
To me the “Blackmail” is asking for the tip BEFORE providing service. Don’t tip? Then does a surprise await you in your meal? The
Waiter with a POS system at my table after service ... Yes
Me at the register when picking up my food order ... No
If I’m self-checking out, then I should be tipping myself.
Some many people love being the victim nowadays.
I LOVE the ability to give a little extra for someone who don’t es a job well or better. I especially tip when getting takeout, because (having worked in food service) prepping a takeout order takes as much a skill as does being a waitress.
I can always ignore the tip prompt.
Again, some people are perpetually outraged and triggered. I think they LOVE mental bondage. The same losers bemoaning the tip prompt are descendants of the PMRC and Tipper Gore.
It’s called FREEWILL. Deal.
Life gets a whole lot easier once one understands the incredible power of the word “no”.

Yeah, waiters live off tips. Starbucks workers live off wages.
I won’t tip on those things. It’s a shame too for the places that use them, because whenever I see one of those I refuse to leave any tip, that I sometimes would leave. What works a lot better for them is to have a tip jar out. I don’t mind leaving some bucks in those because they don’t make you feel obligated to donate to them.
The IRS doesn’t like tip jars.
agreed...too many weaklings who shrivel up when they face anything controversial or confrontational...they simply cry and do what they’re told (i.e. pay this tip).
Yep, there is a chicklet for 0%, just use it. It’s there for a reason.
Always a worry if you go back. Used to be a place in St. Augustine Florida that did that qwap. Third time we went for pickup we found two huge roaches in the bag with the food. Thank goodness 2 months later the place burned to the ground. Heard it was an inside job but can’t verify that part. Some people.

Yeah, I was talking to a few coworkers about not being vaxxinated with someone and taking vit-d and ivermectin instead and I had like five faces make that look of “I want to ask why” but they didn’t dare do so in front of others.

how about a discount for providing your own labor?
pizza places do it if you pick up
Exactly!
You can tip yourself for doing all the work at a self checkout?
I’m in!
I assume you mean palmetto bugs not hand rolled wacky tabaccy?
As with all efforts at emotional manipulation in public life, if you have clear, well reasoned standards, morals and convictions, you are immune.
