Fast-food giant Wendy’s is set to automate its drive-through service by employing an AI chatbot powered by Google, replacing human employees who normally take orders. One Wendy’s executive gave the chatbot high ratings, saying, “It’s at least as good as our best customer service representative, and it’s probably on average better.”
The Wall Street Journal reports that fast-food chain Wendy’s plans to automate its drive-through service by using an AI chatbot and Google’s natural-language processing technology.

An AI chatbot working a drive thru? This should be interesting!
60% of the time is about how often McDonald’s gets my son’s order right.
Don’t care as long as it is understandable and doesn’t give me an attitude...like “Real” order takers do.
I suppose that makes sense.
While there may be a little bit of ‘the latest thing’ faddish tech-nerdishness about this, it is mostly a direct response to the idiotically high new minimum-wage laws.
Soon, they will replace most of the kitchen staff with robots. And they are working on self contained mechanical kiosks that will dispense your ‘fresh cooked’ bug-burgers with no humans involved, other than perhaps route drivers stocking the machines with the ingredients.
I don’t rush out to tell twitter, facebook, instagram, Tik Tok etc.what I had for lunch... I don’t much like Google knowing what I ordered or how I paid for it either.
Oddly written, but it sounds like they think it's better than a human, their best human. I suspect it is better than the window person taking orders and it will save on payroll. Besides, nobody wants these jobs anyway they tell us.
Fast food is poison!
I’ll have the agglutinated beans with womble sauce. The 10 pack, please.
It won’t be long before someone trains it to give out free meals; followed by the company’s hasty retreat.
I’d like a baconator please with large fries large soda and a frosty
AI: you sound like you are breathing heavy Dave, you sound overweight. No, you aren’t allowed to ordered that. We do office a Michelle meal? would you like that?
whats in it?
A cracker, grilled carrot and a spoon ful of yogurt.
The executive who is ready to replace people with AI that doesn’t need a break, time off and can work as many hours as needed until the dreaded spinning wheel happens.
I. work around automation, have for decades. It requires people.
Will it be able to understand ebonics or spanish?
And given our current immigration fiasco, an AI will have the advantage of speaking any of the 100s of languages of the illegals.
The only $15/hour workers that the Dems care about anymore are the ones who work in the county vote tallying centers.
You know at some restaurants the AI will get your order correct much more often than the humans do.
It’s the Law of Demand.
When price goes up, the quantity demanded goes down. In this case, the wage goes up and Wendy’s hires fewer people. Surprise, surprise.
If automation does not work, then they can increase the price of Wendy’s food. In that case, people will go to Wendy’s less often. Wendy’s could then reduce their hours of operation and/or close some franchises. Either way, employment goes down. The law of demand, once again.
Why are people always surprised to learn that prices matter? Prices are not arbitrary. You just can’t raise, or lower, prices without adverse consequences.
