Tesla’s Autopilot misleading because humans still in control: Pete Buttigieg
NY Post ^ | 05/11/2023 | AP

Tesla shouldn’t be calling its partially automated driving system Autopilot because the cars can’t drive themselves, the top US transportation official says.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg says he’s concerned about Tesla’s marketing of the system, which is under investigation by his department in connection with crashes that have caused at least 14 deaths.

“I don’t think that something should be called, for example, an Autopilot, when the fine print says you need to have your hands on the wheel and eyes on the road at all times,” Buttigieg said in an interview with The Associated Press.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an agency within Buttigieg’s department, has sent investigative teams to more than 30 crashes since 2016 in which Teslas suspected of operating on Autopilot or its more sophisticated automated Full Self-Driving system have struck pedestrians, motorcyclists, semi-trailers and parked emergency vehicles.

There are no crunchberries in Cap’n Crunch cereal either; because crunchberries do not exist. Maybe someone should sue.

Oh wait. They did. And they lost.

Hey, Pete, it’s also misleading (aka: a complete lie) that EVs help to save the planet. Talk about that.

I read somewhere that the younger you are the more you trust the tech. So idiots get behind the wheel, tell the autopilot where to go and then proceed to read a book, take a nap or attempt to reproduce in the back seat. Trouble is they not only thin themselves from the herd, but often take others with them.

That said, adaptive cruise control and lane assist do make driving on the interstate quite a bit easier. But being a geezer, I still keep my hands on the wheel.

Bootyjudge clearly hasn’t read the fine print, but that doesn’t stop from his mouth from running on autopilot.

Wheres Elon Musks response. Should be epic as usual. Some thing like...”In the interest of consumer sensitivity as well as inept/insecure transportation secretaries, Tesla vehicles have optional moderated autopilot modes for the driver to hold onto the wheel if they so desire.”

I’ve ridden in one. Friend input the address, car drove out of the driveway, out of the neighborhood, onto the freeway, drove on the freeway for 3 miles, occasionally passing slower cars, and exited, all by itself. All while observing other traffic, operating turn signals, and obeying posted speed limits.

It’s fully automatic. I wouldn’t sleep in it, but it mostly works as advertised.

I actually somewhat agree with Butt-whatever on this one. Hey, even a stopped clock is right twice a day! :-)

If I’d been in charge, I would have named the current system “Copilot”, as it’s an assistant, not a full-fledged driver. It can handle the easy stuff, but I’d be very wary of it (for instance) correctly responding to police hand signals, or other unexpected things like some construction zones.

A future system, which should include Level 4 or 5 autonomy would be the point wher I’d announce, with great fanfare, that it is now “Autopilot”, and capable of working without supervision. Note that there still might be moments when an alarm sounds and the human in the driver’s set would need to take over, or presumably the car would pull over safely and park.

I’m impressed with Tesla’s approach and tech, it just isn’t quite ready for the “Autopilot” name...

I turned all the "driver assist" stuff off in mine. I tested it and found it wanting to "help" me in the wrong ways. Of course, to be fair I live in a somewhat rural area with a lot of curvy unpainted roads. Plus it didn't respect other cars and pedestrians getting close to my lane (when I'd veer over to put space between us the car tried to "help" me get into the center of my lane).

It doesn't help me trust it given that, as a programmer, I've written my share of bugs.

10 feet of +/- error with an autopilot, one way or another, in an aircraft at 31,000 feet is no big deal. Barely a tic mark on the altimeter. Pilots DO NOT take off or land on AP. It's sort of a rule...

10 feet, one way or another, in a car is fatal.

Only democrats could be stupid enough to trust a car autopilot.

"...but it mostly works as advertised."

Until it snows, and all the cues it uses vanish... Just a light dusting, or leaves, or dirt on the road, or some minor error with the GPS mapping...
It's like trusting Helen Keller. Remember the old joke about how her parents used to punish her by moving the furniture?

Samie same.

...and at altitude there are no pedestrians, no bicyclists, no road debris, no downed trees, no potholes, no sinkholes, no trolley tracks, no slick pavements, no roadway construction, no mudslides, no pylons, no flooding, no blind driveways, etc.

There are fully contained transit systems such as monorails and even they can't fully function on autopilot.

There was a fatal crash a few years ago iirc in Florida - the car didn’t see a stop sign due to an overgrown tree. It was a small neighborhood road intersecting with the larger boulevard and just drove straight past. The white line at stop signs was there, but the car didn’t notice the line or see the red octagon.

I’ve heard there is more technology now... and I am sure it will only get better in time. We can’t expect it will be perfect...

... But one day, not too distant future, you won’t need to own a car or even use an Uber. You just dial up and a car drives itself to you, takes you to your destination then goes on to another location to pick up another passenger etc. Repeat all day or all charge. There are other issues with that e.g. disease spreading, cleanliness etc. But it’s a possible future. The car could make scheduled stops for cleaning and charging, or even have sensors and cameras to check for cleanliness.
