Oakland teachers and the Oakland Unified School District reached agreement on Saturday evening on providing “reparations” for slavery for black students, though an ongoing strike still continues.
As Breitbart News has reported, the teachers’ union went on strike earlier this month to demand salary increases and a variety of policy changes, including “reparations” for black students — who, ironically, they were denying access to education by going on strike with just a few weeks left in the 2022-23 school year.

Let me get this straight.
The government of a state that didn’t ever have legal slaves in the modern era
Is taking money from people who never owned slaves, and
Giving that money to people who never were slaves?
Sounds very...odd to me.
Unconstitutional. Cali joined the union as a free state. They are no due anything.

How many times now have we made this experiment? The ostensible idea is that if we throw enough dollars at the schools ... well, someone, somewhere, somehow will finally figure out how to teach black kids to read and do math at grade level.
It would be a very good thing if someone finally figured this out. But we have pretty conclusively demonstrated that throwing ever more dollars at the public schools will not do the trick. We have been doing that since the 1960's without moving the needle.
I am sick to death of this always being cast in black-white terms. You will note that NO ONE argues for throwing more dollars at the public schools to bring white kids up to the level of Jewish and East Asian kids. And I think we all know that throwing money at the schools isn't going to close that achievement gap either.
At the level of public debate, we could begin by at least acknowledging that academic rigor and objective testing -- the dreaded meritocracy -- is not an instrument of systemic racism and white supremacy.
I’m waiting for some black students to sue the education department and teachers’ unions for failure to teach blacks how to read and do math. Whites and Asians seem to do OK, so that shows intention to deny blacks an education.
That will still cost the taxpayers money, but at least it would put the focus on the real problem.
It’s a given that, if you’re black, you were discriminated against, and you were blocked from achieving, and you are not capable of taking care of yourself...

somebody has to step in and hold your hand and give you stuff that you don’t have the capacity to attain on your own.

Sounds like the worst kind of discrimination ever. If you are being held back from a better life on your own, because you are being described as incapable because of the color or your skin, it’s a roundabout way of saying that you’re less than all other people of different colors and you don’t ave the integrity and capability of making it on your own.
Reading and doing math is “acting white”.

They just created slaves - the ones who lost the money.
Confiscate everything these teachers own and give it to black students; as they have already said, that would be “Justice”, and, after all, it’s the least they can do!
When the Ghost Ship warehouse fire happened in Oakland, there was a press conference that had about a dozen public safety officials; fire, police, building officials, etc. All women without exception. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
Here’s a reparation for them. Give them all A’s for everything - even classes they didn’t take.
Let every one of them graduate right now with “Double Plus Honors”.
And get them out of the schools.
Then, the students that maybe give a sh!t will be left and get on with getting a real education.
No. And I'll bet there are a lot whose predecessors owned slaves. Why should they get anything?
Also, how many of them come from families who moved to America after slavery was abolished?
Needs to be some vetting done.
