Recreational Cannabis Use By Teens Linked to Risk of Depression, Suicidality
columbiapsychiatry.org/ ^ | 5/5/2023 | Ryan Sultan, MD et al

A Columbia University study has found that teens who use cannabis recreationally are two to four times as likely to develop psychiatric disorders, such as depression and suicidality, than teens who don’t use cannabis at all.

The research, published in JAMA Open Network(link is external and opens in a new window) May 3, also finds that casual cannabis use puts teens at risk for problem behaviors, including poor grades, truancy, and trouble with the law, which can have long-term negative consequences that may keep youth from developing their full potential in adulthood.

"Perceptions exist among youth, parents, and educators that casual cannabis use is benign,” said lead study author Ryan Sultan, MD, assistant professor of clinical psychiatry, Department of Psychiatry, Columbia, and a pediatric and adult psychiatrist, NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center. “We were surprised to see that cannabis use had such strong associations to adverse mental health and life outcomes for teens who did not meet the criteria for having a substance use condition."

The Columbia study, Dr. Sultan said, is the first to identify that subclinical, or nondisordered, cannabis use—symptoms and behavior that do not meet the criteria for clinical disorder—has clear adverse and impairing associations for adolescents.

Causation? How many of them would be this way without the pot?

Honestly, I think it would be very interesting to see a study of people who only started to use cannabis after the age of 25 ... or 30 ... or 50.

Is there evidence that the use is statistically “more benign” for older people who start and just more risky for young and developing people who start? Or is it risky for everyone whenever they start but they are just studying young users?

Also, a risk of extra stupidity for the rest of their lives.

I’ve noticed that most people who take drugs are either dealing with depression or suffered trauma. Marijuana is helpful for ptsd BUT it should be monitored andthat is the damn problem. F’n big pharma wants you to be on their products which takes weeks to get to levels that might work or doesn’t work at all. People turn to drugs to self medicate and it can be tragic. I know of a teen girl who was rapped and she did not get help because of her family. She turned to weed then on to Tank or what ever it’s called. Now she’s on the streets at 17. It’s horrible how many times this happens.

Now that pot is legal, big pharma has taken interest and has bought farms. Lord only knows what Frankenstein bio weapon crap they will produce. Just as bad as the legal venders creating high potency crap.

Greed on both sides have destroyed people’s lives.

Pot screws with your brain chemistry, nothing good comes from that.

My experience is that whenever you use a substance to artificially jack up your dopamine production, you end up causing its overall decline.

In that regard, pot and alcohol can make you feel good initially but, over the long haul, you feel more and more depressed.

Every user knows this.

And coke is like pot or alcohol on steroids.

This is entirely attributable to liberal politicians, who are fundamentally without morals, and are intrinsically corrupt.

They deliberately and intentionally started selling pot to people, knowingly hiding the harmful side effects.

They want more people stoned, unable to work, preferably POCs, as justification for taking Whitey’s money and blaming Whitey.

When they realize after they leave home they could never afford it on a regular basis without a damn good paying job... or a life of thievery.

They would have been better off working out.

It ain’t just the teens check out every stoner state on fire with stupidity and every blue city.

Wouldn’t be a bad idea to do a count on D.C. members on it not hard to spot them.

How can teens get pot? Don't you have to be 21 to buy it? Are people breaking the law?

That was my thought.

The only serious pot smoker I know was a guy who was tortured by Hezbollah for three months before being retrieved by special forces.

Says it’s the only thing that works for PTSD.

bitt (From the article): " The research, published in JAMA Open Network.. May 3, also finds that casual cannabis use puts teens at risk for problem behaviors,
including poor grades, truancy, and trouble with the law, which can have long-term negative consequences
that may keep youth from developing their full potential in adulthood. "

Drug permissive countries and States which are permissive towards recreational drugs,
are now harvesting what they have sown.
What a surprize !! Duh !

Are you implying that they would have to be crazy to smoke pot?

Did you miss the part where I said it’s not monitored? Did you miss the part where I said the pharmaceutical industry doesn’t have meds that to help and that people take matters in their own hands? Did I not say that greed on both sides was at fault? Should I now post articles on people committing crimes while on legal prescription drugs?

The whole problem with drugs and addiction falls on the politicians, medical and psychiatric community which is for profit by any means necessary.
