Chemical found in Splenda damages DNA: ‘Genotoxic’ discovery
NY Post ^ | June 6, 2023 | Marc Lallanilla

America’s favorite artificial sweetener could have some bitter health effects, including damage to your DNA.

Splenda is the brand name for sucralose, often added to diet sodas, baked goods, chewing gum, gelatins and frozen desserts.

It’s even found in drug products like Tylenol, Pepcid and cold and flu medicines.

Splenda is 600 times sweeter than sugar and is the best-selling artificial sweetener in America, with sales roughly double those of its nearest rival, Sweet’n Low.

But sucralose has been found to be genotoxic, meaning it breaks apart the DNA in chromosomes and can lead to cancer, according to new research published in the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health.

Let's not get carried away.

“The findings raise potentially concerning findings that deserve further study, but do not practically reflect what occasional or even frequent ingestion of sucralose-sweetened food and beverages have on health,” Dr. John Damianos, a hospital resident at Yale School of Medicine, told Medical News Today.

“sucralose has been found to be genotoxic, meaning it breaks apart the DNA”

That's what makes it taste so good.
Remember to always crush and break your DNA before adding it to your recipes. Releasing the flavor and aroma .

and that's your TOXIC tip for today ...

Doesn’t water break apart DNA?

Also, keep in mind that no evidence exists to suggest that using artificial sweeteners helps anyone lose weight. So why use them – especially if safety concerns exist?

"But sucralose has been found to be genotoxic, meaning it breaks apart the DNA in chromosomes and can lead to cancer..."

I've been using it over 20 years, and don't plan on stopping. Cancer schmancer. Three of my six family members died of lung cancer. One died of a stroke. My only brother died of a massive heart attack at the age of 51. They all smoked their whole life. I never smoked anything in my 75 years. No one else in my family lived to be 75. I'll be 76 in August, the Good Lord willing.

I prefer sugar free soda because it does not leave a sugar coat on my teeth.

I’m waiting for someone to find out what’s bad about “Zero Sugar” drinks. They taste far better than “Diet” drinks.

Notes from Dr. Weil:

Aspartame: Can a Little Bit Hurt?
For every one else, although available evidence suggests that occasional use of aspartame (and all the rest) presents no great risk, I would however recommend following the precautionary principle. In other words, don’t use it.
https://www.drweil.com/diet-nutrition/food-safety/aspartame-can-a-little-bit-hurt/

Sucralose: A Safer Sweetener?
Because it is made from sugar, it seems safe at this time. However, bear in mind that in terms of safety, most sweeteners have looked good when they were introduced only to later prove detrimental to health. Whether they truly serve the purpose for which they’re intended, is another story.
https://www.drweil.com/diet-nutrition/nutrition/a-safer-sweetener/

How Bad Are Artificial Sweeteners?
Since artificially sweetened foods and drinks haven’t made a dent in our national obesity epidemic and seem to be doing more harm than good, I believe you’re better off avoiding them.
https://www.drweil.com/diet-nutrition/food-safety/how-bad-are-artificial-sweeteners/

Non-Sugar Sweeteners And Your Health
https://www.drweil.com/blog/bulletins/non-sugar-sweeteners-and-your-health/
As far as weight is concerned, the differences between those who consumed non-sugar sweeteners and those who didn’t were negligible. The researchers called for long-term studies to determine whether or not non-sugar sweeteners are a safe and effective alternative to standard sugar.

My take? These new findings support the results of earlier studies showing that artificial sweeteners don’t lead to weight loss. Some evidence has actually linked intake of these sweeteners with higher risks of weight gain, obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and other health problems. Artificially sweetened foods and drinks haven’t made a dent in our national obesity epidemic and seem to be doing more harm than good. I continue to advise that you’re better off avoiding them.

Any fake food is bad for the human body.

Fake baby food, formula, is worse than breast milk.

Fake fats, hydrogenated vegetable oil is not good for you.

Fake sugar is not good for you.

And now the elitists are trying to force fake meat on us, as if that’s a good thing.

Nope. No thanks.

Unless it’s something like a tea with no sugar, those “Zero Sugar” drinks are exactly what this article is talking about.

Most of those zero sugar drinks have aspartame, saccharin, or sucralose in it. Those are the artificial sweetners to avoid.

If you can find ones with stevia or monk fruit they are natural and a little better for you.

” So why use them “

Because I am diabetic and like a little sweetener in my coffee.

But post #20 links to an article from 10 years ago. New reports say otherwise.

https://abc3340.com/news/nation-world/chemical-found-in-widely-used-sweetner-damages-human-dna-new-study-says-genotoxic-north-carolina-state-university-sucralose-splenda-susan-shiffman-diet-health-artificial-sugar

You want to consume it, go ahead. I am with Dr Weil and say why take something that may have health risks and that your body doesn’t need, be on the safe side and avoid it.
