Republican delegates in North Carolina voted Saturday at their annual convention to censure Thom Tillis, the state’s senior U.S. senator, for backing LGBTQ+ rights, immigration and gun violence policies.
. . . .
Several delegates in Greensboro criticized Tillis, who has held his seat in the Senate since 2015, for his work last year on the Respect For Marriage Act, which enshrined protections for same-sex and interracial marriages in federal law.
. . . .
Several state legislators, including Sen. Bobby Hanig of Currituck County, criticized the decision, saying it’s a bad idea to create more divisions within the party ahead of an election year when party unity will be paramount.
“I believe that a mob mentality doesn’t do us any good,” Hanig said. “Senator Tillis does a lot for North Carolina, he does a lot for the coastal communities, so why would I want to make him mad?”

Good on the NC party for standing for something! Of course, when Tillis is next up for re-election (2026), we can count on the national GOP to try to suppress all opposition.
This so called AP “reporter” Hannah Schoenbaum has turned her back on the G-d of Israel and His Holy Torah. This is not a news report; it is the intellectual manipulation and misrepresentation of reality. She owns the Lie.
He’s free until ‘26. Like Cassidy no one will run against him unless you count democrats. 100% squish.
Tillis also supported changing the names of military bases and buildings. Now its time to change our NC Senator!
Funny thing is that Tillis was going to lose in 2020 until his opponent got caught up in a scandal.
Another example of the horrendous 17th Amendment— Direct elections of Senators with no remedy for rogue Senators like Tillis who vote against the will of their states.
“Funny thing is that Tillis was going to lose in 2020 until his opponent got caught up in a scandal.”
A few weeks before the election, the Democratic candidate admitted to having had an extramarital affair. Even so, Tillis’s winning margin was less than two percent. I think you’re right that, without the scandal, Tillis would’ve lost.
Tillis wasn't a great candidate. He was just lucky.

Just one of MANY pieces of GOP trash schlepping around Capitol Hill stabbing Conservatives in the back while wasting our tax dollars.
Actually, Tillis would be precisely the type of individual the legislatures would elect. He was, after all, NC House Speaker. You’d be lucky to EVER get a Conservative Senator again with repeal of the 17th. Even heavily GOP states would send RINO squishes on both social issues and outright fiscal leftists looting an empty treasury.
“Funny thing is that Tillis was going to lose in 2020 until his opponent got caught up in a scandal.”
That and he had Trump’s endorsement.
“Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina has really stepped up to the plate,” the president wrote. “Thom is tough on Crime, Strong on the Border and fights hard against Illegal Immigration. He loves our Military, our Vets and our great Second Amendment. I give Thom my Full and Total Endorsement!”
We of Tennessee know of country club squishes becoming Senators (can’t say RINO anymore since uniparty became so apparent). We’re fortunate our current duo appears to be doing right...so far. Damn swamp specializes in corrupting or blackmailing everyone with proximity and time. Repeal the 17th or at least establish term limits.
Senator Tillis does a lot for North Carolina...
Oh yeah, he votes and supports NC’s marriage amendment to the state constitution then votes to recognize SSM at Biden’s request.
He votes for the disasterous 2021 Infrastructure Bill because NC got some road money for US 421. Hoopty doopty. Sold us all out for asphalt.
He is a dreamer schemer. Pushing making illegals legal.
Yeah a real stand up conservative.
He deserves the slap down.
Sen. Bobby Hanig of Currituck County, criticized the decision, saying it’s a bad idea to create more divisions within the party...
I was unaware that there was an active Republican Party in the state.
Good try...Now Tillis, get lost...

Another bad pick, Mr. President.
Again, my argument against repeal remains. We’d have had turds like Lamar! and Boob Corker forever had the leg elected them. Term limits would only work if applied to those working in and for the government, otherwise power would shift to behind the throne (what we have now with puppet presidents).
One thing that has proven a massive and unparalleled failure is civil service in replacing patronage. Creating permanent armies of leftist bureaucrats that undermine every GOP admin and whose numbers only grow with each passing year. Terminate this abomination en masse and restore patronage so that you have individuals loyal to the administration (important for Republicans) and they can only suck at the gubmint teet for 4-8 years and back to the private sector. We don’t do that and nothing will ever change. The bureaucracy IS the D.C. Swamp.
People are still harping on that “repeal the 17th” nonsense in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty three?
Annie, you think POLITICIANS would chose better Senators than GOP primary voters? Really? REALLY? You seriously see it as state politicians vs. federal? It’s ALL of those scumbags against the PEOPLE, that’s what it really is, Annie. Tillis was the SPEAKER of the damn NC State House.
Every member of the Texas State Senate endorsed David Dewhurst (aka DewCRIST) over Ted Cruz in 2012. Alaska is run by a dem/RINO coalition. How would you like TWO Lisa Murkowskis? Nevada? Gerrymandered, I guess NV Republicans can forget about having a chance to elect a Senator.
Look at the history and see why the amendment was passed in first place, sometimes these bastards couldn’t even agree on a Senator and seats were vacant for prolonged periods. Horse-trading, corrupt deals, a disgusting system, reducing an electorate for such a powerful body to a handful of career politicians. Talk about elitism, jeez louise.
(The "Abolish the 17th amendment" crowd, of course, won't bother to actually research any of that to test their theory about whether the legislature would give them better U.S. Senators)
As Impy and Fieldmarshaldj already noted, before he was a U.S. Senator, Thom Tillis was SPEAKER of the North Carolina House, so he's actually a textbook example of why state legislators should NOT be the ones "in charge" of deciding who goes to the U.S. Senate.
When it comes to the CURRENT North Carolina legislature, the Speaker right now is Tim Moore, a longtime Tillis protege and "close personal friend" who was able to climb the rungs of government because Tillis handpicked him to be Chairman of the Rules Committee, giving Moore the gravitas to forward himself as Tillis successor as Speaker after Tillis was elected U.S. Senator. Moore claims to be "against" gay marriage but is best known for blocking a bill from a floor vote that would have NC challenge the Supreme Court's ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges (the SCOTUS ruling that struck down NC's laws on traditional marriage). If anyone thinks Moore would appoint someone "better" than Tillis, I have a bridge to sell you. Most likely, the NC legislature would simply say that Tillis has done such an "outstanding job for NC" that they are opting him to appoint him Senator for life (as long as he keeps bringing home the bacon from NC), with Moore and his fellow lackeys breathing a sigh of relief that they no longer have to waste time spending money to protect Tillis' RINO butt from a conservative challenger during primary elections, thanks to that pesky 17th amendment no longer in effect!
I saw a thread a week or two ago where the same tired argument was made on the topic of Susan Collins stabbing us in the back ("this is why we gotta abolish the 17th amendment, blah blah blah..."). I didn't comment on the thread, but I did quickly google the membership of the Maine state legislature and yup, whoever they would appoint to replace Collins would be 10X worse. For example, the current Speaker of the Maine House is some "black power", defund-the-police, marxist RAT.
This is pretty typical of what you'll find with crooked state legislatures (including "conservative" ones!) , but the "abolish the 17th" crowd has little interest in reality, because it hampers their fantasy that state legislatures would immediately begin appointing Thomas Jefferson clones to the U.S. Senate if the 17th amendment were abolished tomorrow.
And you will note that the "abolish the 17th amendment" crowd is quick to pounce on ANY thread about a treasonous elected U.S. Senator, but they are completely AWOL from threads about state legislatures screwing over the citizens of their states. They have no interest in talking about the 17th amendment when THOSE news stories pop up and remind us of reality in America today. Funny how that works!
