One in four people who have had cannabis-induced psychosis develop schizophrenia

“The increased risk of getting schizophrenia after drug-related psychosis is even higher than what we find in first-degree relatives of those who have been given the diagnosis,” Bramness says.

First-degree relatives are parents and children.

The risk of being diagnosed with the malady for sons and daughters of a sick mother or father is "only" five to ten per cent.

In other words, there is no other risk factor for schizophrenia that is higher than related to drug-induced psychoses.

Trauma, infections and moving to another country are other known risk factors for schizophrenia, but these increase the risk to a much smaller degree.

Drug-induced psychosis is believed to be caused by a person’s drug use.

Good to know.

Since the earliest days of the marijuana normalization movement.

This early pioneer of marijuana legalization agitation Alan Ginsberg, was also a founder of NAMBLA (North American Man/Boy Love Association) and producer of gay pedo rape poems praised in the leftist academic community.

I’m guessing there’s a major difference between psychosis and schizophrenia?

Based on what I smell and see around town, I’d imagine that per capita weed use in San Francisco is about as high (no pun intended) here as anywhere in the country or the world. Cannabis-induced psychosis is a very real thing among some users, as they suffer paranoid delusions about radio waves being beamed into their brains, their thoughts being stolen by others, their food being poisoned, etc. And the figure of 1 in 4 of those suffering such psychosis becoming permanently mentally ill sounds about right based on my observations of the S.F. population.

“I’m guessing there’s a major difference between psychosis and schizophrenia?”

Psychosis is an umbrella term that can include depression, bi-polar disorder as well as schizophrenia.

(Oops, actual spelling of the name is Allen Ginsberg, not “Alan”)

The Reefer Madness crowd needs to dry their knickers:

‘“The connection may be due to the use of drugs triggering a serious mental illness. But it can also point to the fact that people who develop psychosis as a result of drug use have a greater vulnerability to schizophrenia as well,” say researchers Eline Borger Rognli and Jørgen Bramness.’

The way that is worded it might only mean one person in human history.   It is meaningless without specifying how many people have had cannabis-induced psychosis.

Fifty years ago I never experienced cannabis-induced psychosis and I never even heard of anybody that experienced cannabis-induced psychosis.   This is balderdash.

If anybody is diagnosed as schizophrenic after using cannabis they most certainly were already mentally ill and used cannabis to self medicate or used actual hallucinogenics with or without cannabis.

Damn. They must be smoking that real good stuff. All crystal-encrusted and such.

That's because it doesn't exist. Most the stoners I've known in life were self medicating for mental issues. It probably started out as something fun to do, but the fact is, it works.

I've watched someone smoking pot to stop many seizures in someone with bipolar w/schizo tendencies. He was my brother, and had some real mental issues from childhood. The weed "stopped my ticker", he would say. His "ticker" was the onslaught of all these thoughts in his head. When he smoked, the "ticker" slowed down to a point where he could actually deal with what was happening in his head. Make no mistake - he had screws loose to begin with. The wild part was that when he used it, the normal paranoia his brain created was reduced greatly.

Not everyone is affected the same way. If you use the drug and never experience psychotic symptoms, congratulations and enjoy. Perhaps only a minority of weed users will cross the line into psychosis, but only a small minority of tobacco smokers will get lung cancer. That doesn’t means that a causal relationship is imaginary. Some reading material for you, if your mind is open...

Or global climate change. A sizable grant might clear the issue up. Might.
