Leimert (pronounced la-MURT) Park is a middle-class, mostly black neighborhood in Southwest Los Angeles along Crenshaw Blvd. between Obama Blvd (formerly Rodeo Rd.) and Martin Luther King Blvd. (formerly Santa Barbara Ave.). This is a 12-minute video showing the vandalizing and looting of a McDonald's on Crenshaw--only about three blocks from Kim's, a Korean and Chinese restaurant where I sometimes eat when I'm in the area.

The African American kids I grew up with would never do this, and they had a lot more legitimate grievances than those who are doing this now. I am happy to have had them in my life. I’ve moved a long way away and haven’t talked to people from my old neighborhood years now, but I’m pretty sure they’d be appalled by what is now happening.

Let's not be hasty, here. This was most likely a spirited debate over Kierkegaard's idea that anxiety and despair are essential to the human experience that just got a tad out of hand.

Naturally, violence was the only resort.

People in some fast food places have been sent to the emergency room with severe beating injuries for neglecting to put the requested ketchup packets in the bag.

A woman got the wrong order in the drive-thru once, pulled the car around and parked, and went into the McDonald’s dining room shooting customers and random employees.

A friendly teenage black girl working inside the drive thru was unable to supply the full order to the customer outside. He reached in and pulled her body through the window and he and his one front seat and one back seat pals brutally beat her, trapping her head between the cement curb and the car wheel as they thrashed her and kicked her.

It’s all a matter of values and priorities and temper tantrums.

Some Juneteenth celebrants are just expressing their appreciation to all the people who fought and died for their freedom in the Civil War by showing us what good citizens they are.

As MLK said, they should be judged by their character.
