‘UPS dug their heels in’: Teamsters UPS strike plans emerge, could affect 30 percent of parcels
The Hill ^ | 07/18/2023 | TOBIAS BURNS

Posted on 07/18/2023 11:54:19 AM PDT by ChicagoConservative27

Spirits are high among the International Brotherhood of the Teamsters as negotiations with shipping giant UPS stay frozen ahead of a July 31 contract negotiation deadline, The Hill found in a range of interviews.

If the Teamsters strike, some 340,000 drivers, warehouse workers and other employees could walk off the job in one of the largest labor actions in U.S. history.

The potential strike is part of surging labor activity in the U.S. and around the world as a result of elevated inflation, which central banks have been attempting to fend off by raising interest rate in an attempt to take the wind out of the labor market.

UPS guy and myself used to talk all the time at my last job. He used to say, I am going to stay with UPS until I can't walk. I am going to milk them for all the money and benefits I can get.. He was in his early 60s.

Been with USP since 1978.

UPS handles over 6% of our nation’s GDP. Fed X said they would never be able to handle the extra load.

All of my shipments from Amazon are now shipped by US mail. Nearby FedEx office is open, apparently accepting packages that will be shipped some day.

Nice young FedEx guy brought a package up last week early in the morning. I told him it was nice to see him and his big smile first thing in the morning. When he left, I heard him talking with another FedEx guy about not having air conditioning in their trucks in hot, hot weather. I’d complain about that too, and who knows about other issues.

I hope drivers and FedEx come to terms soon.

According to an over the road UPS driver that I know personally, one of the main points of contention is that the company wants to in dash cams aimed at the drivers allegedly for safety reasons.

IOW, they can yell at them if they are looking sleepy and the like. But the drivers fear more sinister reasons ranging from they can catch them picking their nose or listening to rightwing talk radio to "inappropriate conversations" on a hands free device.

Never fear. Pete Buttboy is ramping up extra capacity. Things are under control.

The impact goes far beyond UPS.

That 30% cannot be picked up by the other carriers and sustain any kind of customer expectation.

All of it will overflow...like a clogged septic system.

I would object to that, too — but I understand completely why companies in the trucking industry do that. It’s their way of covering their asses in the event of a lawsuit … and I’m sure UPS gets sued with such boring regularity that they keep an entire law firm busy every day of the week.

fedex trucks are for the most part independant contractors or small contracted companies.

this is UPS and the teamsters that are fighting over things.

A/C in a big brown aluminum box in the sun that gets shut down at every stop isn’t going to do much good.

Nonsense, AC instantly gets cold and blows cold air on you, even if the rest of teh truck is hot

Amazon trucks, many of which are contracted to small companies that operate them in fleets, are loaded with cameras and sensors and the like. They use their Alexa tech to track everything - and know where the drivers.vans are, can see in all directions, they know if the seatbelt is fastened, they know if the driver is speeding or ran a stop sign.

There is an Amazon fulfillment center up the road. I have a vendor and a client nearby and If I drive up there in the morning I sometimes get stuck at a stop sign and watch literally dozens of those Amazon trucks heading out for their daily deliveries. I also know where the drivers get there gas - best to avoid that station at the end of the working day.

I talked with a long time UPS driver today. Sounded like the company has not been offering much. He’s still hopefull that a last minute deal will be made. But, he voted YES, to strike. He said he teamsters at GM might join them.

FWIW, I work in a unionized plant. The Teamsters are one of the more reasonable unions out there. Overwhelming Trump supporters judging by the lunch pail stickers.

“””A/C in a big brown aluminum box in the sun that gets shut down at every stop isn’t going to do much good.”””

Correct, huge open doors, the truck moves a few hundred feet and is turned off.

The A/C needs to be designed completely differently from normal and aimed directly at the driver so that he can cool a little for the couple of minutes of truck movement, in effect a cold fan, it would also be available so that he could park for a few minutes to get his body thermostat back under control if it was starting to get away from him.

Being completely immersed in 100 or 110-degree air with zero relief and none available, only interrupted by rapid movement carrying loads can quickly turn into death or a medical emergency.

That is in dry heat, in Houston with the humidity, you simply can’t sweat, so even though you want to keep going there is no sweat to keep your internal furnace from getting hotter and you have to stop, no matter how frustrating that is, but a cold fan aimed at you can get you back into the game after a break.

What people don’t seem to realize is Amazon is a part of this problem. Amazon has their own drivers some places, other places use UPS contract drivers, who receive no benefits. Still others use UPS drivers, who drop off packages at the post offices to be delivered by USPS workers. In our area, these postal workers are also contract workers, who receive no benefits and don’t stay in the job more than a month or two.
