What children NEED are the basics: reading, writing, and arithmetic. Children who have not mastered the basics should be taught NOTHING BUT the basics until they are at minimal level. No sex education, nothing but basics.

Those who have mastered the basics should not be held back by those who haven’t.

Students with IQs of 85 and below cannot reason abstractly and forcing them into algebra and trig is senseless cruelty.

Pretending that “if only” (the teachers weee better, there was more money, etc) the impact of low and very low intelligence will be attenuated is a lie.

That was actually 23 years ago. So care to guess how dumbed down it is today?

Don't get me started on teachers unions, their total control of education bureaucracy and standards, and dumbing down.

Our local state university offers high school students an advanced math program, based on college coursework. It is funded by endowment from a wealthy person, and university professors volunteer to teach the high school kids. It is totally free. HS students graduate doing college-level calculus, multivariate calculus, vector analysis, etc...

Kids just need to test-in in 7th grade, and get to the university twice or three times a week for scheduled classes. Parents with admitted students will often car pool. Kids coming out of this program of course wind up at top universities, med-schools, etc...

Our lazy, woke, stupid local public school bureaucracy decided, while they can't prevent kids from attending this advanced program, they would stop even announcing the program exist, or helping children/parents prepare for the entrance test.

These people are truly evil.

It’s all just practice for the day when the only homework handouts will be election ballots, with the “X’s” already included. Parents’ handouts on registration day will be diplomas, nothing else. It’s only fair.

“Collaboration”

I hate this. This is just a way to use the labor of the smart to give credit to the dumb. Companies are doing this as well. They call it teamwork. Then they can select the individuals to promote that meet their diversity goals instead of the most qualified.

Do the minimum is the solution. Use your mind to figure out how to progress outside of work.

Well, that’s what our ‘professional’ educators believe. After all, they know better than the parents - because they have a teaching degree, maybe even a Masters degree.

So only they are the ‘qualified’ individuals to decide WHAT our kids get taught.

/s

It really begs the question, there’s a difference between HOW to teach and WHAT to teach. At some point, they’ve been led to believe that they’ve the autonomy to decide WHAT to teach...and not just in math either.

They’re communists, even if they’ve been taught that it is something different. Unless everyone can achieve a standard then NOBODY will achieve the standard. They call it ‘equity’, it’s just another name for poverty, the equal misery of everyone.

Every time I see an HR department show the slides on “equity”, showing 3 people where only one is tall enough to look over a fence to watch a game, so the solution is to provide steps for the other two so they all see at the same level, I want to laugh at them. It ‘feels’ like you’re just helping those less able, which seems to have virtue. Then you realize what it’s really saying. Their respective height represents productivity and the fence represents a standard of living. So the implication is that everyone can have the same high standard of living even though only 1 person is producing enough to achieve it.

No difference from communism. Eventually, those that produce won’t, because there’s no point. Then those that produce less have the same living standard - which is now just a level of misery for everyone.

The new guidelines push transparent nonsense like “math identity rainbows”: Each student is to pick a color representing his or her individual strength — communicating, perseverance or numerical reasoning (i.e., actual math) — with an eye on teamwork in a supposed “mathematical community.”

Next up, "medical identity rainbows" with surgical procedures outcomes based on communal equity, not medical knowledge.

...called SMSG.

Over 60 years ago now, our Geom teacher in high school was easily distracted by us bored students into telling stories (mostly whoppers).

For us, SMSG stood for "Sometimes MacDermott Sticks to Geometry."

That said, IIRC, it was "School Study Mathematics Group", and everyone, teachers and students alike, knew that it was beyond ineffective.

True racism is telling a kid you can’t suffer through something difficult and slap down a victory.

What makes a kid truly confident? Defeating the monster, not shrieking about one.

I went through this as well. In fact my junior year math teacher went off her program for about three months and taught the SMSG background so that we could use the new texts. (I recall that they were paperback)

Anyway I caught on to what they were trying to do with math and with this teacher’s help managed to get through it. Had to learn all the terms like associative, communitivity, transitive Etc. But once you got that the problems were not different.

The truth, when I became a math teacher many years later, these terms were still with me. But since I did not major in math I never got to see how they worked to make understanding of different numerical systems easier.

The whole concept of individual intellect being something other that absolutely equal is the dim core of white supremacy.

Socialists KNOW, as a foundation of the True Faith, that there is no such thing as slow children. "Intelligent" children are automatically racist bigots.

...when I became a math teacher many years later...

Good on ya' my FRiend!

My impression of SMSG is that it was a predecessor to the more more damaging fuzzy math that so many kids have today; however, I'd love to learn your opinion on that.
