I have a friend who instructs LEO’s in shotgun training. He often says the safest place when they are practicing is in front of them. Not true for some as I regularly shoot with some who are very good but as you mentioned these guys do practice.
I would sue them for so much, it would put the department out of business.

A knife is not a gun. Even if he threw the knife at them the chance of serious injury is pretty low.

Aside from the fact that if the course does not include any Constitutional law it is worthless to the public they will serve.

I see the APD went into instant CYA mode and tried to arrest the innocent bystanders they’d shot. This would have helped to mitigate their accountability.
And many of the best cops ever seen went into it because their dad and brother did. A stint in the army Maybe and then out to a department. At 3am when there’s a lunatic breaking in your door, that’s who you want coming. Not some kid who went from high school to college and got a degree in sociology.

As far as a knife a wielding guy goes any cop ought to be able to handle it alone otherwise what good is he? Cops of the past understood this because they were Men. They knew their department, their fellows and their community had expectations of them. This straddling the line between chaos and peace with THEMSELVES is what made their job so indefinably hard and thankless. How the hell do you even hire a cop who can’t do the job? (Oh, wait, we do that routinely now every day in every place on every force) Of course the feminized ones today need a whole platoon to piss their girly pants and pray and spray. I’ve seen a knife wielder handled by one I’ve seen one handled by six. No one dead. No bullets flying all over the neighborhood.
Wouldn’t want to be an innocent bystander walking around anywhere a guy like YOU patrols.
