African Union Chairman Says Putin's Grain Offer Is Not Enough, Calls For Cease-Fire In Ukraine

The chairman of the African Union said on July 28 that proposals by Russian President Vladimir Putin to provide grain to Africa were insufficient.

In a closing address to a Russia-Africa summit in St. Petersburg, Azali Assoumani also said that a cease-fire is necessary in Ukraine.

Putin earlier told the African leaders that Russia was ready to supply Africa with grain, some of it for free, after refusing last week to extend the Black Sea Grain Initiative before it expired. The deal, brokered last year by the United Nations and Turkey, allowed Ukraine to export grain safely from Black Sea ports despite the war.

The global price of grain has soared since Russia withdrew and since it subsequently began bombing Ukrainian grain export facilities.

Russia wants to provide 25,000 to 50,000 tons of grain for free in the next three to four months, Putin told the African leaders on July 27. Zimbabwe, Mali, Burkina Faso, Somalia, Eritrea, and the Central African Republic are to receive the grain.

President of South Africa to Putin: "In particular, you spoke about grain. We proposed to implement the Black Sea Grain Initiative, we said that we would like the Black Sea to be open to world markets. And we did not come here to ask for some "gifts" for the African continent."

I’m curious, do these African nations even TRY to produce their own food? Is it simply not possible to grow food in Africa? Only hand outs will do?

Africa is in no position to demand anything.

P.S. Grow your own food.

Africa was growing their own food...then they took away the land from the whites who were growing the food...and the blacks simply don’t like being farmers.

Not surprised that the Globalists outbid Putin for his loyalty, as the Globalists DO NOT mess around.

It's a self-fulfilling prophecy. Why become a farmer when you have to compete with free food that comes with aid?

There is the real nub of this. Decades of "free" have crushed the Africans willing to farm and additionally crushed any local markets, because "free" as a market price cannot be further undercut unless a citizenry is paid to consume a product. (Or in the case of the mRNA gene therapies, mandated.)

The multi-nationals in the West, through the effective use of politics and messaging about "food aid" have very effectively killed African "food" markets, for the sake of government-bought "food" produced elsewhere to be "free" in Africa. Those growing elsewhere get paid. The middlemen get paid. The government employees get paid. African farmers? Buh-bye.

And of course the Zimbabwe political idiocy was adding fuel to the fire, such that Rhodesia's "breadbasket" became Zimbabwe's starvation.

Interestingly, from the article: "Assoumani said Putin had 'demonstrated that he is ready help us in the field of grain supply,' adding that this is important, 'but it may not be quite enough. We need to achieve a cease-fire.' Putin has shown that he is 'ready to engage in dialogue and find a solution,' he said. 'Now we need to convince the other side'."

That part of the article was not excerpted, so it is herein.

Additionally, as posted to another thread:

""...a 2001 moratorium on the sale of land to foreigners had always represented an obstacle to unrestrained privatisation. As post-Maidan governments turned again to the IMF for financing, aid was conditioned on a series of land reforms that would finally allow foreign corporations to acquire vast tracts of the country's farmland. In 2020, Zelenskyy gave in to the IMF's demands and finally repealed the moratorium. 'Agribusiness interests and oligarchs will be the primary beneficiaries of such reform,' said Olena Borodina of the Ukrainian Rural Development Network. 'This will only further marginalise smallholder farmers and risks severing them from their most valuable resource.' But the World Bank could barely contain its excitement, gushing: 'This is, without exaggeration, a historic event.' Even though the new law isn't set to come into force until next year, US and Western European agrobusinesses have already bought up millions of hectares of Ukraine's farmland — with 10 private companies reportedly controlling most of it."

Pootie offer all the African nations 50 tons of grain to be split however they see fit.

A generous genius too!!

Egypt imported 1.3 million tons of Ukrainian grain last year ... their share of 50 tons should alleviate hunger, right?

Kudos! Thanks for the citation from Der Spiegel. The article is from 2005, demonstrating that the plea has been assiduously ignored.

Not in favor of any one nation, nor of its citizenry. In favor of massive multi-national corporations.

Small business everywhere is essentially under siege from the effects of multi-nationals lobbying various governments to leverage themselves over the average James Shikwati or the average small farmer in our United States, in Canada, and throughout the EU as we watched the Dutch government try to shut down farmers in the Netherlands. The same is the multi-national game in many places and lands.

African nations have a wildlife problem. Grain farms and wild grain-eating herds in the 10s of thousand do not mix.

Everyone keep in mind that certain groups want the African nation to remain picturesque and poor so they can feel good about themselves while on safari, or throwing trash on to the desert plateau of Giza.

***grain to Africa were insufficient. ***

Well, just ask Rhodesia for help! They used to supply ALL Africa!

Oh Wait! That was Rhodesia, not Zimbabwe.

Sadly true. In reading about almost all primitive cultures everywhere, the MEN consider themselves to be Warriors and Hunters. Kids mind the cattle, and the women do all the labour.

I remember when a UN group began to drill wells for the local natives. For the first time they had clean water. Then the pump broke and it was back to parasite infested swamp water.

The UN group came back in and taught the WOMEN how to repair the pump as the men considered it beneath their dignity to do such work.

--- "certain groups want the African nation to remain picturesque and poor so they can feel good about themselves...."

While we might lock horns from time to time and contentiously at that, I want to offer kudos for your observation.

As above, and in line with the Spiegel article from 2005, "helping" by killing markets is what has been occurring. Not for this nation's best interests, but for a distinct and very small group. Ditto Europe.

"Picturesque and poor" can be said of our "rust belt" and Appalachia, but definitely one must jettison the "picturesque" part of the phrase when considering Democrat-run inner cities.

So worth highlighting AND repeating:

"certain groups want the African nation to remain picturesque and poor so they can feel good about themselves...."
