Cook shortage at Army post shutters some mess halls, leaving hungry soldiers scrambling: report

An Army installation in Texas has been struggling to put food on the table for its soldiers for months as the base faces a shortage of cooks to staff its dining facilities.

Fort Cavazos, Texas, previously known as Fort Hood, has struggled to provide its junior enlisted troops with meals for months, with the base only opening two of its 10 major dining facilities for much of the summer and with limited times, according to a report Tuesday from Military.com.

According to the report, the base has faced a shortage of cooks to man the dining facilities around base, with many Army cooks either on deployment or away on field training. Soldiers who depend on the dining facilities to eat have also faced confusing and conflicting opening schedules for the facilities as base officials attempt to move personnel around to staff the food service buildings.

I’d prefer making my own food anyway.

Hard to find someone who’s goal in the military is to be a cook. And we don’t want to hurt their feelings by making them cook unless they want to.

When I worked at the Eglin AFB mess hall one summer 30-some years ago most of the staff were contracted. Only a handful of uniformed staff involved. My summer job was filling in for the contracted staff as they were taking their vacations.

"Just bring back the draft. Then DC would have the cooks they need and the young innocent American boys to fight and die in ALL of their globalist adventures."

What happens when our garbage establishment institutes a military draft but then they do not draft the illegal aliens in our country? That would be a huge issue with Americans because illegal immigrants already have many more privileges than we do as citizens with none of the Goddamned obligations. I remember how after the 9/11 attack that the southern border flow reversed with a lot of illegal alien men running for Mexico. If I was young and had been drafted but the military was not drafting illegal aliens I would NOT show up.

How about the Colonel tells the Captain who tells the First Sergeant to pick a couple of Privates to go work in the mess hall? Ever heard of that?

Yep, but I’ll bet they have plenty of psychological mentors and counselors encouraging gender translation.

The DoD is led by an Affirmative Action General (Ret).

If Donald Trump ever gets back into the Whitehouse, he is going to have to do a serious culling of Obama generals and admirals! Many of the O-6s would probably have to be culled as well. The rot goes deep.

I’m pretty sure I read recently that the perverts the military has been recruiting are exempt from many physical requirements and will be shielded from actual combat.

back in my day ( a LONG time ago) this would be grounds to get the Base Commander fired. In today's military, who knows?

This is unconscionable. The excuse of "all of our cooks are on deployment or in training" doesn't make any sense.

It does reflect piss poor planning and total disregard for the grunts from the highest levels.

When I was at the Presidio of Monterey many years ago, while in language school, we had the best chow ever. The army cooks there kicked ass in quality of the meals.

Back at the air force bases, we were stuck with contractors supplying the chow and it was always that damned turkey roll six times a week. Midnight chow was the only real food that was good there, and the only food we had cooked by military cooks.

It would offend the liberals, if we put armed forces on the border. So will never happen.

Or to paraphrase what I’ve heard, we can protect the borders of Kuwait, South Korea, Ukraine, but not our own borders.

I can’t speak for other than Navy, however on Submarines, the Cook was very well respected and considered by the crew. They busted their butts to put good food on the plate, and got it done, and all of ‘em were volunteers.

Hard to find someone who’s goal in the military is to be a cook.

I was thinking that a few weeks ago when watching a tour of the submarine USS Indiana on YouTube. They had two cooks on duty serving the guests. But everyone has to eat. Serving the mess has a long tradition in every navy, and those boys have to put up with the same hardships as the rest of the crew. Wear the dolphins proudly!

Reinstalling the draft at this time would be the equivalent of the anti-Semitic Tsarist government attempting to draft Jews. While Russian Jews were ready to fight for countries like America or Britain, where many emigrated, they strongly resisted Russian conscription, hiding, sslf-multilating, or emigrating. Getting heterosexual white men to serve will be at least as difficult for the current Washington regimw.

For the time being, Army officials are considering a plan to allow soldiers to use meal cards typically used at official dining facilities at on-post military restaurants such as Panera and Qdoba. That idea is currently being piloted at Fort Drum, New York, according to the report.

"Considering"?

(Wouldn't this solve the problem almost immediately?)

Heh, in the USN they always served mid-rats for those who worked the 7 PM to 7 AM shift, and I felt like all I ate for about a year was breakfast food...scrambled eggs, bacon.

Well.

I guess that isn’t so bad after all.
