Cook shortage at Army post shutters some mess halls, leaving hungry soldiers scrambling: report

An Army installation in Texas has been struggling to put food on the table for its soldiers for months as the base faces a shortage of cooks to staff its dining facilities.

Fort Cavazos, Texas, previously known as Fort Hood, has struggled to provide its junior enlisted troops with meals for months, with the base only opening two of its 10 major dining facilities for much of the summer and with limited times, according to a report Tuesday from Military.com.

According to the report, the base has faced a shortage of cooks to man the dining facilities around base, with many Army cooks either on deployment or away on field training. Soldiers who depend on the dining facilities to eat have also faced confusing and conflicting opening schedules for the facilities as base officials attempt to move personnel around to staff the food service buildings.

Your post makes sense. But there could be one exception. If we are ever attacked Pearl Harbor or 9/11 style, there would probably be a rally ‘round the flag moment.

The scary thing is that the Deep State would have no problem faking such an attack.

Well, I ate plenty of “C-rats” unheated and out of the can when on active duty. Why can’t the current troops do the same.

Of course, they and the Biden admin are angling to get in some minority owned civilian food delivery service to pick up the slack. No way they will go for the inexpensive, practical, and reliable option.

During Carters 3rd year the base I was stationed at, the mess hall told us the last weeks of Aug. Sept. Oct. they were out of food. The rations were ordered but have not been delivered. Turns out it was because of Congress cutting budgets of the military. The motor pool had a sever shortage of parts, oil, batteries, tires, fuel etc. And every Democrat admin since has done the same. There is absolutely no support for our military.

Silly me. I thought most of these DFACs were run by contractors. If they are using GIs to run them, is that because they cut funding for the contractors so more money could be sent to Ukraine?

Back in the day... when I got sick of the Shit on a Shingle at the Army mess I would head over to the Air force Base on Post and get a good Steak dinner. Never had anyone ask for ID or orders, they would ask if I wanted more.

How about the Colonel tells the Captain who tells the First Sergeant to pick a couple of Privates to go work in the mess hall? Ever heard of that?

No can do. Staff needs to be trained and certified, not just "here's a pot and there's a stove".

There's more to this story. I suspect several cooks got busted for something criminal. The last time I saw something similar at a military base was when multiple members of the clinic staff got busted by OSI as part of an Oxycontin theft ring. It was super confusing and no one would talk about it, not to hide it, but to keep from contaminating potential jurors.

The doctors had to write prescriptions for members and family to go off base to get filled. They sent some folks in TDY, called up a few Reservists, but it wasn't really ironed out until they could PCS enough staff into the base.

While the Air Force outsourced most of their food services, the Army still uses a lot of military members because they need such skills when they deploy.

I suspect there's more to this. To be short staffed at just one post usually points to a successful sting operation, usually for drugs or theft. I know of one base when I was in (not our own) that had several Articles 15 and discharges for an online porn ring where the wives were the "stars" swinging with different men and some of the videos were shot in base housing.

LOL, my dad (career Navy) used to make that for us as kids, and I bloody hated it!

He used to have thos small glass jars with the salty, thin sliced, dried beef inside. Had a blue label, and a pop off white led.

Ugh. Though I did steal the jars and eat the salty dried beef sometimes...:)

On my Youngster Cruise in 1973, I used to set my alarm clock so that I could get up and partake in the mid-rats ... hey, I was just a growing boy (constantly hungry) ..

I have a hard time complaining, because you could get as much bacon or ham as you wanted, and let’s face it...it takes a lot to screw up scrambled eggs on a ship. (not the powdered ones!)

When I was in the military (early 1980s), all the cooks were military personnel. There was even an MOS for it.
