Cathedral City in chaos: Elderly residents are scooped up by JCB tractor and driven to safety across roads destroyed by storm Hilary - after Hilary dumped nearly one year's worth of rain on Palm Springs

Dramatic new photos show the devastation in the Coachella Valley of California, as Cathedral City reels from record-breaking rain caused by Tropical Storm Hilary.

Residents of an assisted living facility were pictured on Monday being rescued by JCB machinery, with many roads left impassable.

Ryan Hunt, a spokesperson for the city, said around a dozen people were taken from the home for the elderly.

All of the people being rescued are 'doing OK,' Hunt told CNN on Monday.

Mudslides had cut off the desert town, which is unaccustomed to such rainfall. In Palm Springs, nearly a year worth of rain fell in a day.

Parts of Cathedral City experienced 'debris flow' of a 'large amount of the mud and sand' moving into the area due to Hilary, Fire Chief Michael Contreras said earlier Monday.

He said that rescue teams helped seven people who were trapped because of the debris.

Hilary arrived in California as a rare tropical storm that dumped five inches of rain on coastal areas, and 10 inches or more in the mountains, National Weather Service meteorologist Richard Thompson said.

In Palm Springs, the storm dumped 4.3 inches of rain in 24 hours - nearly a typical year's total. In Death Valley, about 1.68 inches of rain fell.

Thompson said Hilarywas the first tropical storm to make landfall in Southern California since September 25, 1939.

No fatalities or significant injuries were reported in the United States, but one man was killed in Mexico when his family was swept away while crossing a stream on Saturday, Mexican officials said.

Ronald Mendiola, who lives in Cathedral City, said his family of five - including a two-year-old took - refuge on the roof of their home in the desert town.

I read scooped up and immediately thought of that scene from Soylent Green.
Heard on discord that some areas had a nothingburger, but which specific areas I’m not sure yet.

Too many people on this thread have the Biden kitchen fire mentality. Hope you, your parents or other loved ones never have to be rescued in a front end loader.

Having your belongings flooded is one thing, mud is whole other story.

Justice is when big mouth insensitive assholes and their loved ones suffer the same fate.

It is annoying to see people chortle about weather in places that aren't accustomed to it.

For example, when the Deep South gets a record cold wave and it goes below freezing as far south as Miami, you get people up north bragging about how they deal with weather that is below zero.

What they don't take into account however is that people in south Florida don't have heating systems in their homes and they also rely on winter crops for their livelihoods.

Four inches of rain in the desert can be as devastating as a foot of rain all at once in the Northeast.
