In deadly Maui fires, many had no warning and no way out. Those who dodged a barricade survived (AP article confirms Maui police blocked escape routes.)

As flames tore through a West Maui neighborhood, car after car of fleeing residents headed for the only paved road out of town in a desperate race for safety.

And car after car was turned back toward the rapidly spreading wildfire by a barricade blocking access to Highway 30.

One family swerved around the barricade and was safe in a nearby town 48 minutes later, another drove their four-wheel-drive car down a dirt road to escape. One man took a dirt road uphill, climbing above the fire and watching as Lahaina burned. He later picked his way through the flames, smoke and rubble to pull survivors to safety.

But dozens of others found themselves caught in a hellscape, their cars jammed together on a narrow road, surrounded by flames on three sides and the rocky ocean waves on the fourth. Some died in their cars, while others tried to run for safety.

“I could see from the bypass that people were stuck on the balconies, so I went down and checked it out,” said Kekoa Lansford, who made several trips into town to look for survivors. What he found was horrible, Lansford said, with dead bodies and flames like a hellish movie scene. “And I could see that people were on fire, that the fire was just being stoked by the wind, and being pushed toward the homes.”

The road closures — some because of the fire, some because of downed power lines — contributed to making historic Lahaina the site of the deadliest U.S. wildfire in more than a century. But there were many problems that day, and in some ways the disaster began long before the fires started.

A flash drought in the region provided plenty of kindling, and Hurricane Dora brought strong winds to Maui as it...

I don’t believe the police did it with malice aforethought.

The people giving them orders, however, did.

Doesn’t excuse them of the consequences of their actions and the deaths they caused.

Following orders is not an excuse.

Why would Police Block Exit Routes?

I want the police to go to prison for ten years.

I want the Maui government officials hung.

The only thing I can think of is that the police were thinking that they needed to keep the road clear for emergency vehicles.

However, those vehicles would be coming from Kaanapali, which is at least 10 minutes away IF they weren't already spread thin working on their own fires.

At EVERY level of government, the leaders made exactly the wrong decisions:

This was a complete breakdown of a government run by Democrats.

Why would Police Block Exit Routes?

To exterminate inconvenient landowners who refused to sell to Bill Gates, Oprah Winfrey, Mark Zuckerberg, etc.

It was not a breakdown.

It was a plan.

The survivors that went around the cops…good chance some of them took videos to ID the cops.

Did the police escape?

Actually, I think this was more incompetence (by people above the cops) than malice.

Hawaii is a Democrat hell-hole of incompetent privileged bureaucrats, some racially privileged, some privileged because they’re the sons of what we would call in the South “good ol’ boys.” None of them…water, emergency management, fire department, police…functioned and hundreds died horribly because of them.

The only thing I want to see is accountability. But under President Senile and the Dems (Hawaii is a one party-state, like most of the US now), there won’t be any..

You left out one. At 4:45 pm, when the fire was out of control, Maui officials issued a "shelter in place" order.

To believe that, I'd have to believe that we have Osama bin Laden types running the government willing to kill thousands in a very public display of inhumanity for personal gain.

Small town. 12,000 people, 5 square miles. Three weeks later, 1000 people are “missing”. Okay, take a bow American press, really getting to the bottom of things! Lol.

You left out one.

Thanks.

I left out a second one, reports that the Maui fire department contained the fire, but then went home instead of remaining on-site and monitoring the area for flare-ups.

The city trimmed all the brush away from the billionaires’ properties and the power lines, left the water on and turned off the power when the 70 mph winds kicked in.

The city left brush touching the power lines and the peasants’ properties, turned off the water and left the power on when the 70 mph winds kicked in.

The billionaires and their properties survived, the peasants and their properties were turned to ash.

If you aren’t there by now, you’ll never get there.
