Shocked by Niger coup, Victoria Nuland appeared “desperate” during Africa tour
The Grayzone ^

Posted on 08/31/2023 7:02:45 AM PDT by FarCenter

A veteran South African official detailed meeting with an unprepared and “desperate” Acting Deputy Secretary of State, Victoria Nuland, begging for local help rolling back the popular coup in Niger. The recent BRICS conference might give Nuland even more to fret about. When US Acting Deputy Secretary of State, Victoria Nuland, traveled to South Africa on July 29, her reputation as a blunt instrument of Washington’s hegemonic interests preceded her.

According to a veteran South African official who attended meetings with the senior US diplomat in Pretoria, however, Nuland and her team were demonstrably unprepared to grapple with recent developments on the African continent — particularly the military coup that removed Niger’s pro-Western government hours before she launched her multi-stop tour of the region.

“In over 20 years working with the Americans, I have never seen them so desperate,” the official told The Grayzone, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

Pretoria was well aware of Nuland’s hawkish reputation, but when she arrived in Pretoria, the official described her as “totally caught off guard” by winds of change engulfing the region. The July putsch that saw a popular military junta come to power in Niger followed military coups in Mali and Burkina Faso that were similarly inspired by mass anti-colonial sentiment.

Though Washington has so far refused to characterize developments in the Nigerien capital of Niamey as a coup, the South African source confirmed that Nuland sought South Africa’s assistance in responding to regional conflicts, including in Niger, where she emphasized that Washington not only held significant financial investments, but also maintained 1,000 of its own troops. For Nuland, the realization that she was negotiating from a position of weakness was likely a rude awakening.

Serving both parties and advancing empire, one regime change op at a time

Throughout the past decade and a half, Victoria Nuland has established herself as one of the most heavy-handed – and effective – agents of Western-directed regime change ops within the State Department. As the wife of the arch-neoconservative strategist, Robert Kagan, who advised both Republican presidential contender, Mitt Romney, and Democrat, Hillary Clinton, Nuland embodied the interventionist consensus that prevailed across both parties in the pre-Trump era. In fact, her first high-level job came under the watch of Vice President Dick Cheney, when he appointed her to serve as his deputy chief of staff.

...

Thanks to BRICS, Robert Kagan’s notorious blueprint for the US to serve as a “benevolent’ global hegemon may be overtaken by the developing world’s vision for a century that honors the political independence, self-determination, and territorial sovereignty of all states. Will the generation of US officials that comes after Nuland accept Washington’s place in this multipolar world, or will they insist on going down fighting?

Victoria Milan’s is one evil b***h. Obama’s fixer. One of the great unseen hands working to bring about tyranny in this country. Sure she worked for Bush, since deep state hacks didn’t bother him a bit, but she hit her stride when Obama became president.

Nuland Is the poster child for everything wrong with the State Department. She and the ilk like her need to be cleansed from the bowels of the deep state. (That’s another attempt to clean up my language on FR. You can use your imagination to determine the four letter word I wanted to use to describe Nuland.)

Maybe, the US military supposedly has spent millions building a military base in Niger, that has probably stopped, and the base will now go to Niger, Russia or China.

We seem to be really good at spending billions arming our enemies.

They do. If it was legal for them to do, They would murder all of us. Right now the Law protects us. But given the climate in Washington, D.C. how long will that last. Already many are being persecuted and prosecuted. And one or more have been murdered.

Shocked by the coup?

Or, shocked by the fact that they’re not listening to her anymore?

Listen to the guy running Burkina Faso right now, he’s telling the people of his country that the days of being exploited by the West are over. Days of foreign companies coming in to mine their metals, while the people eat dirt are over.

Seems that the “natives” are restless and tired of folks like Nuland, the French and the EU taking advantage of them. And this is happening all over the continent.

And folks will ask why the Chinese and Russians are doing so much work in Africa. Well, even though both are taking advantage of these countries, they’re doing it more subtly and instead of preaching LBGT crap, they’re building roads, schools, wells, etc etc etc.

However, South Africa is a completely different animal. That place is a disaster and only getting worse.

I doubt it. The US forces will stay. They will declare it was agreed-to under some long-term agreement, pay some people off, draw out discussion, and otherwise militarily dare the Nigerian faction running the country to force them out - use all methods at their disposal

I'm not agreeing or disagreeing, only estimating what will happen.

GreyZone is a fringe, far left wing conspiracy theory website. Why are you reading it, let alone posting it?

The recent BRICS conference might give Nuland even more to fret about.

Now this is a joke. In twenty years of operation, BRICS has yet to make one single decision about literally anything - which makes sense because its members don't share the same interests (except for Russia and China, which have their own trade and defense alliance). It is a pure PR theater. I just don't see why you are amplifying this garbage.

---- "....Nuland and her team were demonstrably unprepared to grapple with recent developments...."

That someone might disagree with you and you haven't considered that a possibility is a sign of a narcissistic sociopath.

One should remember that she also worked under Cheney, the "other" one.

A short resume:

July 29, 2023
United States Deputy Secretary of State

May 3, 2021
Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs

September 18, 2013 – January 20, 2017
Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs

May 31, 2011 – April 5, 2013
Spokesperson for the United States Department of State

June 20, 2005 – May 2, 2008
United States Ambassador to NATO

Brown University (BA) Russian literature, political science, and history

Pretty good career path for a bachelor-ette of arts.....

"...demonstrably unprepared...." but politically VERY well connected.
