NEW DELHI: Invites sent by Indian President Droupadi Murmu calling herself "President of Bharat" for a dinner on the sidelines of the G20 summit have stirred speculation that the government may be about to change the country's name.

WHAT IS THE CONTROVERSY ABOUT INDIA'S NAME?

By convention, invitations issued by Indian constitutional bodies have always mentioned the name India when the text is in English, and the name Bharat when the text is in Hindi.

However, the invites - in English - for the G20 dinner called Murmu the President of Bharat. An official at the president's office said they didn't want to comment on the issue when asked by Reuters.

“Is India Changing Its Name to Bharat?”

If they REALLY want to change their name to a card game, I guess it’s their right to do so.

Names can change.

Siam became Thailand

Persia became Iran

Turkey changed the spelling but don’t know if the pronunciation of Turkey has changed .

Why is the name considered a foreign invention?

The word Hindu comes from the Sanskrit word for the Indus River and people there SINDHU, which also has origin in Persian language

It was called “HINDUSTAN” and “HIND” before the British arrived.

Bharat is already India’s name, according to Wikipedia:

India, officially the Republic of India (ISO: Bhārat Gaṇarājya),[21] is a country in South Asia. It is the seventh-largest country by area; the most populous country as of June 2023;[22][23] and from the time of its independence in 1947, the world’s most populous democracy.[24][25][26]

Then we should start calling Poland “Polska”, and Warsaw “Warszawa”.

Yeah the days before lyrics on demand were interesting. I like listening to Otis Redding records and catching when he got the lyrics wrong on a song he was covering. Happened quite a lot.

Turns out the Stax guys would just go to the record store downstairs and listen to a 45 of whatever they wanted to cover and try to write down whatever lyrics they could make out. If they couldn’t figure it out, then he’d just make something up that sounded good.

This is actually a big deal, Hindi is not a majority language, though it is a plurality. There are 23 official language, and while officially Hindi was going to be the national language by 1965, that never happened.

Too many people didn’t speak Hindi nor knew its alphabet. English, a non-native language was a natural compromise as its every group’s second language. Using it didn’t put one ethnicity above the rest.

Modi is playing with fire, if this is a trial balloon to make Hindi the national language.

It's India's saving grace.
