Elon Musk admits preventing Ukrainian attack on Russia by refusing access to Starlink 'to avoid being complicit in a major act of war' - but furious Kyiv says his 'big ego' led to civilians being killed

Musk says he refused Kyiv's request to activate Starlink satellites over Crimea He refutes claim that he cut the connection, however, saying it was not active

Elon Musk has admitted to thwarting a major Ukrainian attack, enraging officials in Kyiv who have blamed him for the deaths of children and 'committing evil'.

The billionaire CEO of Tesla, X (formerly Twitter) and Space X was accused in a new book of cutting off Ukraine's access to Starlink over the Crimean coast to prevent an attack on the Russian naval fleet.

Responding to the accusation, Musk said that while he did not order engineers to switch off the satellite system, he did refuse Kyiv's request to turn it on because - he said - he wanted to 'avoid being complicit in a major act of war.'

The world's richest man began providing free access to Space X's Starlink internet terminals in the early days of the Russian invasion in February 2022, which have been vital in allowing Ukrainians to communicate and coordinate their resistance.

But, at the end of last year, his enthusiasm began to wane, and he became increasingly concerned about taking sides - ultimately ordering that the internet be shut down to stop a 'kamikaze drone' submarine attack on Russian warships.

Obviously Elon Musk knuckled under to Vlad’s threats to take out a few Starlink satellites. And disrupt them in other ways too. Hack their computer systems? Or hack any computers in Musk’s empire of various companies.

What total BS. If this is true Musk saved many Uke soldiers. Starlink or not the Musk aided counteroffensive would have been as big a total disaster for the Ukes as the billions in NATO equipment, dead in the water counteroffensive of this summer.

"he did refuse Kyiv's request to turn it on because - he said - he wanted to 'avoid being complicit in a major act of war.' "

yeah, but, by not turning it on he was complicit.

Isn't it horrible how someone completely uninvolved in something, has power over it. Twitter/X controlled our elections, banned our President and now Starlink controlled a war. Elon elped Zelensky get filthy rich and US poor.

Taking out the Russian Black Sea fleet might look less smart in the morning when you sober up after the counter strike on your most precious cities and assets.

demanding ANYONE be involuntarily involved in a war, no matter who they are or what they control, is what KEEPS the world at war. IF people who support endless wars want to continue the killing, you will FIND another way to do it...again and again. seems the toughest thing in life today is being a pacifist in a savage country that demands you be involved in the bloodshed.

Yeah, everyone knows that the best strategy is to give in to the bully!

Maybe if Ukraine refrains from destroying Putin's Black Sea fleet, he will steal only HALF of Ukraine's territory!

Yeah, "Better Red than Dead!"

I would have never dreamed that I would live to see the day when Free Republic members express anxiety about harming a poor little Russian dictator, or warn against degrading his military forces!

Musk saved their bacon early on by linking them to Starlink when they were attacked. that was salvific. but by now they could have set up their own system which only they control. i am tiring of Zelenskyy’s pointing of fingers. either win this or go to negotiations. the meat grinder it has become is on him.

Be it as it may, the UA uses drones both in the air and in the water to extensively attack Russian assets across Crimea and Naval ports in Russia on the Black Sea.

Do the use Starlinks? Who knows? No one is saying.

But they do use satellite guidance, as well as preprogrammed coordinates.

I thought Starlink was provided to Ukraine (for free IIRC) for civilian use only.

If not enabling it helps the Russkies, doesn’t that imply the Ukies are using it for military purposes?

Apparently Ukraine doesn’t own radios. You would think with the billions we send over there they would splurge.

Wise words. I would not like nuclear war either.

Musk interferes too much, in order to cater to Russia and its threats made to him and his businesses. I suspect the Ukrainians now have other ways and means besides Starlink. Musk is obviously too erratic to depend on in a war.
