When I find myself depressed, I always cheer up when I think that John McCain is dead.
In 21st century America, the vast majority of public figures are revealed as scoundrels. A few may, if lucky, appear as highly conflicted figures, having both good and bad sides.
Perhaps it was always thus. Or maybe we live in a corrupted age of corrupted humans. Are we lucky George Washington was not subject to 21st century media exposure?
One thing is for certain, it is a defining characteristic of our post-modern, panopticon surveillance and media, materialistic, anti-Christian age - there are no heroes any longer. The only thing one is allowed to believe in is “the state.”

McCain was a war hero—for the North Vietnamese—they got a collaborator and got to blackmail his father the admiral—a double win for them.
