Rep. Mary Peltola’s husband dies in Alaska plane crash

Democratic Rep. Mary Peltola’s husband, Eugene, was killed in a plane crash in Alaska early Wednesday, her office announced.

The 50-year-old lawmaker, in Washington for the return of Congress from its August recess, planned to head home to the Last Frontier to be with her family.

“He was one of those people that was obnoxiously good at everything. He had a delightful sense of humor that lightened the darkest moments,” her office said in a statement.

“He was definitely the cook in the family. And family was most important to him. He was completely devoted to his parents, kids, siblings, extended family, and friends — and he simply adored Mary.”

General Aviation is a very important mode of transportation in Alaska. In many areas it is the only mode of transportation. Not surprising that Alaska leads the nation in per capita percentage of private pilots and in aircraft ownership.

Still, general aviation has a persistently high rate of accidents/incidents. Alaska leads in those statistics as well.

Unfortunately, his skill as a pilot is in question in this crash as he was the pilot and sole occupant of a Piper PA-18 Super Cub (taildragger) when it crashed shortly after takeoff.
