Yep! I wonder how many of them would claim to be devout Christians, but seem clueless that they’ve elevated him to the second coming of Christ! Harsh but true nonetheless. It’s not just that they increasingly don’t have bedrock conservative philosophical beliefs. The Christian faith many profess appears to be pretty hollow too. Because to us conservatism & nationalism was never about Trump. He was a vehicle in 2 elections that we voted for, but for us it was about supporting conservatism, not one man or electoral candidate. If someone’s support has more to do with a the man running for office than all of the principles you profess, how will that sustain itself or translate to future electoral victories once the man is gonne? Your principles have to take the lead. They have to be the foundation that things are built on. This was never supposed to be a loyalty test to a person. Actually, you screw yourself doing that. If your opposition knows that your main reason to vote for someone is about loyalty, they are going to expose that weakness. In politics, before mindlessly jumping on board with somebody, you have to think ahead & insulate yourself by trying to predict your oppositions next move. I could see it in 2020. They exploited that a huge portion of Trump voters considered loyalty as their biggest reason for voting for him. They were sticking by his side no matter what, even if they knew it would end in disaster. They weren’t even willing to listen or talk about concerns their fellow conservatives would raise. They pretty much shouted them down. The opposition is seeing this & using it to their advantage. Similarly to 2020, they are laying the groundwork for painting Trumps biggest supporters as an irrational cult that thinks he does no wrong & is ready to burn it all down if they don’t get their way. As a right wing conservative myself, that pretty accurately describes what it’s feeling like right now- even on FR.
If I am put off by it & I’m on the right, how do you think the centrists & swing voters are going to feel seeing it? They are going to air this every day and twice on Sunday all the way to election day. And the swing voters in swing states, that he NEEDS to win to be elected, are going to see it and head in the other direction. They aren’t going to vote for someone with a literal cult like following of angry irrationals, worshipping an idol. It’s gotten kinda scary!
Trump led something very important when we he ran & we elected him. Up until him, we were saddled with lackluster candidates with boring, Vanilla personalities reading off of approved cue cards & always supporting a core set of issues that were opposite what their voters wanted- mass immigration, free trade deals, loss of American jobs, etc. It was a big business style conservatism that didn’t even connect withconservative people. Trump introduced America First nationalism and made it as important to conservatism as constitutionalism, libertarianism, market economics & traditional moral values. That’s a major reason that I voted for him twice!
But I never elevated Trump to idol states or saw loyalty to him as the reason I would vote for him. To me it was all about voting for a staunchly conservative philosophy, because I think that is the only thing that will save us & help us prosper. The downside of making loyalty your most important reason for voting for someone is that you could end up loyally following someone over a cliff and not even no it....... until its too late! 🤔
