DeSantis says Trump’s abortion remarks show ‘the danger’ in reelecting him

Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis says Donald Trump’s recent statements on the abortion issue show the former president’s “values” are out of step with Iowa GOP voters. Trump said during an interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press” that the six week abortion ban DeSantis signed into law this spring was a terrible mistake.

“Donald Trump may think it’s terrible. I think protecting babies with heartbeats is noble and just and I’m proud to have signed the heartbeat bill in Florida and I know Iowa has similar legislation,” DeSantis says. “I don’t know how you can even make the claim that you’re somehow prolife if you’re criticizing states for enacting protections for babies that have heartbeats.”

DeSantis made his comments during an interview with Radio Iowa. (Audio below)

DeSantis suggested Trump’s remarks are :a window” into how Trump’s 2024 campaign is diverting from the promises he made during the 2016 campaign. “And I think he’s changing in a way that is not consistent with the values of the people in Iowa,” DeSantis told Radio Iowa.

Trump also indicated during his “Meet the Press” interview that he’d negotiate a deal on abortion that’s acceptable to both sides. DeSantis said that’s “the danger” of returning Trump to the White House for a second term.

“I’ve given him credit for his accomplishments, whether it’s the court appointments, whether it’s the Abraham Accords…the deregulation and I think he does deserve credit for that, but anytime he did a deal with Democrats whether it was on budget, whether it was on the criminal justice ‘First Step Act,’ they ended up taking him to the cleaners,” DeSantis said. “I think if he’s going into this saying he’s going to make the Democrats happy with respect to right to life, I think all pro-lifers should know that he’s preparing to sell you out.”

Current Florida law bans most abortions after the 15th week of a pregnancy, but a court ruling this fall could let the six week abortion ban DeSantis signed this spring go into effect. Activists in Florida, on both sides of the abortion issue are now gathering petition signatures, hoping to amend Florida’s state constitution so it reflects their views.

“Clearly, we’ll make the positive case for what we did as something that is appropriate and based on science and based on what is just,” DeSantis said.

A University of North Florida poll conducted in March found 75% of Florida residents surveyed either somewhat or strongly oppose the six week abortion ban DeSantis signed into law in April. “As a leader, it doesn’t register to me, to be quite frank,” DeSantis said regarding polling data on abortion. “I mean I think there are issues that come from your beliefs and I think that you advance those because you think they’re right.”

Abortion is one issue that clearly differentiates DeSantis from Trump. Especially when you also have to reconcile Trump 2016 vs Trump 2024.

Trump got us SC justices that overturned RvW, and was the only president to attend the RTL rally.

If you prefer talk over results, go ahead support someone else.

Me, though, I’m sick of losing.

This is definitely a differentiation - there is 0% chance that any woman associated with DeSantos ever had an abortion.

It doesn’t really matter. Any answer to the abortion issue, given by a right winger, is always wrong to the masses, as the media makes sure of that.

I don’t know why they all don’t just say it’s a States Rights issue and leave it.

“I don’t know why they all don’t just say it’s a States Rights issue and leave it.”

A perfect, legitimate out for Trump, since he did what we all thought was probably impossible — got Roe v Wade overturned.

I can’t understand why he jumped in the fight.

Abortion is one issue that clearly differentiates DeSantis from Trump.

Except it doesn’t. It’s nothing more than a political tool for candidates right now — because neither one of them is ever going to be in a position to sign a fetal protection bill as President.

Anyone who thinks the same GOP that refused to overturn ObamaCare (after years of promises to do so) is ever going to pass a pro-life bill with a Republican President in office is delusional.

I don’t think Ron’s go far enough. Regardless, I’m still voting Trump.

Trump should have just said that it’s a States Rights issue and leave it at that .

If the 2024 Election is actually held, it will be the last "real" election (I use the term "real" but we know the Marxists will cheat in every way possible).

Trump is not perfect by a long shot, but he will lead a counter-revolution to the Marxist takeover of our country. No other candidate has shown willingness or ability to stand up to the Deep State and Marxist infrastructure in place.

DeSantis' fight with Disney has been a positive sign that he might be willing to participate in such a fight. But only Trump can lead the fight. And there are many questions as to whether Trump can actually stand against the Marxists for very long.

All the other candidates don't even seem to understand what we are up against. As a side note, RFK, Jr. seems to see part of what we're up against. He might end up being an ally in the coming war.

BTW, the coming war isn't about Conservatives vs Liberals...it is about patriots against the Marxists...and the Marxists have just about completed their revolution. The only thing remaining in this Marxist takeover is their declaration of victory and the lockdown of the country so that they can consolidate their conquest.

The coming war will be an asymmetrical/guerilla effort and nothing more. That said, such efforts can be successful in overturning an enemy's revolution. That is our only hope.

“Abortion is one issue that clearly differentiates DeSantis from Trump. Especially when you also have to reconcile Trump 2016 vs Trump 2024.”

In other words, you think that DeSantis, by merely signing a bill passed by a Republican legislature, accomplished more than Trump did getting Roe v Wade overturned, in the teeth of fifty year of entrenched Federal and national opposition?

And DeSantis using the same language — Trump is dangerous — proclaimed by the MSM and globalists for years is fine with you?

DeSantis is the reason we could lose the election. He keeps knocking Trump who has the numbers growing while his own are diminishing. He should be supporting the one who can win but he is selfish and egotistical.

Trump shouldn’t have called Desantis’ signing of a heartbeat bill at the STATE level “ridiculous”. This one is a self-inflicted wound.

I agree, all of the candidates should say "It is a state's rights issue." But that isn't really enough as the federal government is still involved. Should the federal government continue funding abortions? Should the federal government continue requiring it in any insurance plans? Should the military be funding abortions? Should the federal government have any involvement whatsoever if facilitating abortion? On this, I personally say No.

Thus, (1) It is a state's right's issue, (2) End federal involvement, facilitation, or funding of abortions.

Lastly, since Trump has repeatedly criticized DeSantis for signing a 6-week ban (as have other governors), it is fair to have him answer at what week, if any, he says abortion should be banned. Lacking that, it is fair to say Trump supports abortion up to birth.

Agree! DeSantis should run his state and stay out the presidential race until his governorship is complete. Saint DeSantis ain't all that.

What’s the difference between Ronnie’s 6 week abortion law in FLA
and a 15 week abortion ban that Trump has mentioned?
There is no difference. The end result is the same.
A baby is murdered.
Until if and when this American Society changes it’s views, abortion will
stay, unfortunately.

Trump has shown ZERO ability to lead against the Deep State. He has been 100% ineffective against them and has funded them in his budget deals. Trump turned this nation over to the Deep State during the Covid crisis.

Trump wants to federalize the abortion issue again, showing he did not understand why we wanted it turned back to the states.

Trump wants to be loved. He wants deals with the Democrats on abortion and assault weapons. He will not dismantle the Deep State.

Anyone who supports an openly pro-abortion, pro-assault weapon ban candidate has no right to call themselves a conservative.

WWIII will usher in an emergency declaration to suspend elections. Not just here.

There may not be a 2024 election.

This is why you lose and will always lose.

The left is happy to incrementally implement their agenda. You are happy not implementing any part of your agenda.
