While Western pundits have warned that Ukraine’s prospects for a successful counteroffensive are bleak and that hopes of retaking Crimea have been dashed, Ukraine’s marine drones have consistently outmaneuvered the once-dominant Russian Navy, pushing it into retreat at sea.
Ukraine’s rising marine drone capabilities are still evolving, but as they advance, many expect more aggressive strikes against Russian naval assets in Crimea and across the Black Sea region as the war grinds ahead.
At the outset of Russia’s full-scale invasion in early March 2022, the Ukrainian Navy sank its own flagship frigate, the seasoned Hetman Sahaidachny, to prevent its seizure. That left Ukraine with only a handful of riverine patrol vessels to engage Russia on the open sea.
Russia, on the other hand, had its full Black Sea Fleet at its disposal, including ships captured and reflagged from the Ukrainian Navy when Russia invaded and annexed Crimea. Ukraine lost over 80% of its naval capabilities in the 2014 Crimea invasion.
Despite boasting the world’s second-largest navy, over the past year Russia has been forced to relocate much of its Black Sea Fleet, including all its Kilo-class submarines, from Sevastopol in occupied Crimea to Novorossiysk farther east on the Black Sea coast in Russia – more than 570 kilometers away from Odesa and other targets in Ukraine.

Former US Navy Admiral James George Stavridis remarked after the attacks, “We’re at a juncture in military evolution akin to the game-changers like Agincourt or Pearl Harbor. Expensive manned surface warships now face existential threats from affordable drones.”

Russia is capable of utterly crushing Ukraine.
Today.
The thing preventing that at the moment, is Russia has been thus far fighting like America does.
If however things continue to escalate, and involve AMERICAN weapons …
Things might get a bit unpredictable.
Everyone has had a very valuable training period.
We should all call a truce.
Right now. In my uninformed, far-away viewpoint.
Rigggght....
>>Everyone has had a very valuable training period.
It is a chance to test out new 21st century weapons concepts and tactics.
The Spanish Civil War 1936 - 1939 was a testing ground for new weapons prior to WW II.
I hope our Navy is paying attention. Mass inexpensive drones area truly a game changer.
The Russian Navy isn’t superior to anything except the Canadian Air Force.
They have been fighting, rather like we have been fighting, for nearly the last century. Since 1945 anyway.
Same results.
It is ok for everyone to stand back now.
In fact it was time for that, about six months ago.
Stand down everyone.
Those Russians sure are dumb and the CIA... I mean Ukraine... sure is smart.
It absolutely amazes me how quick the Ukranians are able to become so proficient in the use of Western and especially American high tech weapons. Not only learn the skills needed to opreate, but become so proficient in weaponry that not only has the instruction manuals printed in a different language, but a different alphabet. You would almost think they have........................naaa. Couldn’t be, the media would be all over that. Maybe. Probably not.
They are so smart, maybe we should hire those corrupt Nazi's to fight our forever wars./s
It seems to me the best way to protect against drones, either air or sea, is to destroy them before they are sent out, and/or their operators. Once activated there is not much of a chance to defend against. - an amazing weapon!
I guarantee Russia is doing everything it can with the setup it has. If you’re a dictator, then you don’t dare have a military with a unified command. If you do, then whoever is in control of that military is the next dictator and he’ll likely not wait for you to die of natural causes. Therefore, the military has been divided into lots of little fiefdoms who don’t cooperate with each other, because if they did the leader of the other fiefdom would claim credit and you’d take the hits. You could model this with a man fighting with his hands tied behind his back...better, give him eight arms and hands and let them fight, but not in a coordinated way. So, you have a literal monster who can’t seem to coordinate anything. This is one reason why Wagner did so well. It was one force with one commander. He did so well that the army, that controlled the logistics feeding Wagner held back the supplies he needed, thus causing him excess casualties.
If there was a ceasefire now it would only benefit the Russians. If Ukraine is ever to live in peace and security, then the present Russian state must be destroyed. The fighting between Azerbaijan-Armenia is the beginning of that breakup. Georgia and Chechnya will quickly break away. The countries in the Russian Federation want to be out from under the Russian Mafia state...not so they can be free, but because they want their own Mafia state so they can keep the money they make. (Yacht manufacturers around the world will rejoice at the breakup of the Russian Federation.)
You do realize Russia has the single largest nuclear force on the planet?
That is irrelevant bravado
Why is FR tolerating this Zalensky propaganda?
Correct. Boats need to be smaller, faster, never loitering, hard to spot by satellite, and more numerous.
The only place remotely safe for big boats is in deep blue water 1000 miles from shore. And that safe location won’t last for long.
The days of big aircraft carriers are over. Replace each one with 20 small craft with VTOL manned aircraft whose job it is to direct swarms of attack drones.
It absolutely amazes me how quick the Ukranians are able to become so proficient in the use of Western and especially American high tech weapons.
That western societies run on either english or german. Never herd that.
It could be your average Ukrainian is smarter than the legendary russian. That being out of a command and control economy and with a 15 year lead has a group of 20-30 year olds elevated and completive vs a system with its roots in 70 years ago.
If it was not a complex western bear trap, it will be sold to historians as such by the russians.
Why is Free Republic tolerating the lies propagated by Russian loving anti Americans? Free Republic is for Americans and not for lovers of American enemies
Free Republic does not support war crimes nor crimes against humanity
Until it isn’t
amen
Freeper Russophiles can’t grasp the fact they are aiding and abetting an American enemy
