A new study released Monday said Merck ’s widely used antiviral Covid pill can cause mutations in the virus that occasionally spread to other people, raising questions about whether the drug has the potential to accelerate Covid’s evolution.
The findings may increase scrutiny about the usefulness of the treatment, molnupiravir, which was one of the first Covid drugs available to doctors worldwide during the pandemic.
Molnupiravir works by causing mutations in Covid’s genetic information, which weakens or destroys the virus and reduces the amount of Covid in the body. However, the study published Monday in the scientific journal Nature found that Covid can sometimes survive treatment with molnupiravir, leading to mutated versions of the virus that have been found to spread to other patients.

I can’t help but wonder if that was by design or by error.

Viruses mutate to become antiviral resistant.
Weeds mutate to become herbicide resistant.
Rats mutate to become rodenticide resistant.
This study shows that SARS-CoV2 is just like everything else. It mutates to overcome a threat. That’s basic evolutionary biology at work.

From the very start there were QUALIFIED Doctors that respected the oath they took when becoming a physician. They treated their patients successfully by using effective treatments such as Ivermectin and Hydroxychloriquin (sp. ?)
Why then were ineffective treatments that caused mutations of the bio engineered virus forced upon society rather than EFFECTIVE AND SUCCESSFUL TREATMENTS?
Yes of course it was intended because we have known what makes novel zoonotic viruses deadly for over a century. Epidemiology is not a new science.
The science behind this drug is new. The earliest paper I have read about the concept dates to 2016 however work on it ramped up when COVID-19 hit. I cannot say that the drug will be successful in forcing the mutations which result in the virus being both more contagious and way less deadly, but I can say that what you seem to be concerned about is already occurring in the wild in Sars-CoV-2 and is the reason why COVID-19 is becoming now like the common cold.

Please correct me anyone with my thanks. I am no expert. I can accept how a mutation in the ExoN domain might deactivate nsp14 which in turn will result in rapid mutagenesis, but how you would make that happen by giving somebody a drug is way over my head.
And since viruses mutate, and RNA viruses excel at that, mandating shots for all in the middle of a pandemic of a novel RNA virus not the smartest thing to do from a public health standpoint.
But then CoupFlu policy has never been about protecting public health, has it...

I clicked the links within the article and it looks like they meant their drug to work like a standard anti-viral and the mutagenesis is an unintended consequence.
I will maintain that mutagenesis and natural selection is exactly what we want.
