Washington Says Goodbye to Pandas Amid Bitter US-China Backdrop

No matter the distance or the weather, Jane Christensen was determined to see the giant pandas before they left Washington.

Now in her 60s, Christensen told AFP she had been captured by the species' magical cuteness over a half-century ago, when China first gifted two pandas to the United States.

"I've had 'panda-monium' ever since," she said under a chilly rain outside the Smithsonian National Zoo's panda exhibit, hundreds of miles from her home in Michigan. All three of the zoo's pandas are leaving for China by the end of the year, bringing at least a temporary end to a decades-old connection between the cuddly animal and the US capital.

Really? Does anyone give a damn about the pandas?! Send ‘em back to China. Or anywhere else for that matter....

China doesn’t take back their illegal aliens but the pandas have to come back.

I don’t get the fuss over pandas. They would be extinct if it weren’t for humans. Totally useless animals, just another example of stupid humans trying to play God.

Update: The pandas defected and are in a safe house in northern Virginia.

Pandas are just giant raccoons. With a little genetic magic America can create giant raccoons to narrow the Panda gap.

Get Fauci to clone them and do some gain of function research. Then we'll have the 2024 election lockdown for 12-foot tall saber tooth pandas wandering the cities hunting for human flesh.

12-foot tall pandas are much scarier than 12 foot-tall pandas.

Red pandas are the raccoon-like creatures you are referring to-giant pandas are bears-not raccoons...

Either way they can probably be cloned...

Red pandas aren’t related to raccoons either, nor even giant pandas. They are closer to bears, but do different as to be in their own family, Ailuridae.

One of the Pandas was born here in the US so let’s make him a citizen LOL.

"One of the Pandas was born here in the US so let’s make him a citizen LOL."

Especially if one of the parents is from Kenya or Jamaica...

The ailuridae are interesting outliers-closest relatives are skunks, weasels-and to a lesser extent raccoons-but they are cuter in my opinion...
