Ukraine's counteroffensive raises doubts about whether the US and Western militaries are training their troops for the right kind of war
Business Insider ^ | Sep 30, 2023 | Michael Peck

The slow progress of the counteroffensive Ukraine launched in early June led to criticism that Ukrainian troops were failing to apply properly the training they received from Western militaries.

But what if the problem isn't with the Ukrainians but rather with Western tactics? Ukraine's woes may be an omen of what might happen if NATO armies have to fight without ample air support and logistics.

Ukraine's counteroffensive was never going to be easy. Russian forces spent months building up their defenses, using a longstanding and still-effective Soviet-era approach to fortifications and adapting new tactics, such as bigger and more concentrated minefields.

The notion that Ukrainian troops would be able to replicate Western-style tactics after a few weeks of training — and discard decades of rigid, top-down Soviet-style command and control — was always a stretch.Learning a new way of war is tough enough in peacetime, let alone in the midst of an offensive against some of the most formidable fortifications on Earth.

The military is not being trained to fight a war with Russia or China. They’re being trained to fight YOU.

Correct. If we do end up in a war with China or Russia, we’ll nuke them. So why would we prepare for a war with them, in the conventional sense.

If we “nuke them”, they will nuke us. Then everything else won’t particularly matter after a nuclear holocaust.

I don't think Putin will use nuclear weapons because at the very least, he will get the land bridge to Crimea. So at least he'll win something out of this war.

He'll only use nuclear weapons if he ended up like a cornered rat. Several times, it looked like that may happen to him.

I don’t get the idea that we’ll just Nuke China and/or Russia we get into a war with either one or both.

That is insane to say the least, why would be so cavalier about killing hundreds of millions of people for no good reason.

There won’t be a nuclear exchange for the same reason Hitler never used chemical weapons. Fear of retaliation in kind. No conventional war could result in the population loss of a two-way nuclear war.

Conventional weapons are to deter or if need be, fight a conventional war.

Nuclear weapons are to deter or fight a nuclear war.

Having only one or the other would be like opening your toolbox and it only has Phillips head screwdrivers in it.

We haven’t won a war since . . . (don’t claim Iraq) . . . uh, (did you say WWII? Wasn’t it Russia that won WWII?) . . . uh, I dunno.

Iraq was messy but I'll say we've achieved our goals in that country. And to me, it appears that they are doing better with "democracy" than countries like Russia and China.

Yeah the Russians beat the Nazis, we provided support so we kept the Russians afloat. But we did beat the Japanese by ourselves.

That's the whole principle behind MAD.

IMO, neither China or Russia are our biggest enemies, we can’t keep communists out of our country, government, schools, etc., they are by far a bigger enemy than Russia or China.

Until we can clean up our own country, we have no business even thinking about getting into any war much less a war with Russia or China.

Agree 100%, and that’s precisely why it won’t happen.

I don’t see how much of anything will get better domestically in the coming years.
Too many issues are lining up in a bad direction.

Fewer people seem to be individualists. They’d rather have free gruel than work for a steak.

Of course, Regime Change is the settled policy of the USA and NATO (and of the establishment of both parties in Washington.)

So if the US gets its way, Putin will be a cornered rat, and he will use nuclear weapons. First on a small scale.

What do you figure happens next?

Joe Biden? Nothing. Putin gets what he wants. But no one is going to have anything to do with Russia. Except for maybe North Korea. Even China will look at Putin and say "this guy is crazy". They'll be isolated for generations.

That’s why I don’t get too worked up over Trump, DeSantis or anyone else, whoever wins the next election won’t make that much difference.

We are on a downward spiral economically, militarily, socially, you name, it, how when it stops is anyone’s guess.

If we keep listen to these insane people casually taking about a war with China and/or Russia, the end could very well be a bunch of mushroom clouds.

Training is in fact real, hands on.

Since the beginning, there have been two electronic surveillance planes tracking up and down in north/south elliptical patterns soaking up every electron of Russian communications emanating from Ukraine.

The planes are American but the crews are from NATO. They are working together and communicating together in a unified endeavor.

Early on, the locations of local Russian HQ’s were determined and the result was the death and destruction of many high and ranking officers. The HQ’s were moved to the point where they actually lost touch and command of their front line troops.

Just last week or so, the situation changed very drastically. The surveillance plane tracking Crimea acted. Missiles provided by the UK emanating from Ukraine sources destroyed three regional or theater Russian headquarters. The attacks came in the daytime when they were fully staffed. They knew exactly what was what. The devastating attacks came when it was known that the commanding officer was present.

The behind the scenes and secret and unknown real cooperative activities within NATO is in fact training for what may be to come.

We won't stop it. I think we'll split up into separate nations. Florida. Texas. California. You name it. May happen tomorrow. 50 years. Or 500 years. But it's inevitable. The fact that the borders are wide open, we may be speeding all of this up.
