ACT scores show college readiness at 32-year low

Students are the least prepared for college than they’ve been in three decades, according to the nonprofit organization that administers the ACT.

The organization found more than 4 in 10 high school seniors hit none of the college readiness benchmarks, saying this is “historic highs in 2023.”

The decline marks a 32-year low for high school seniors’ scores on the test, with results like this last seen in 1991.

I think we’re also getting to the pint where college is not the best thing for everyone. Working your way up the chain may make a comeback....aka...apprentice type situations.

Tests are racist.

I suspect most of the ones that do hit the benchmarks are Asian students.

Things like college diplomas seem to lose their meaning when some other poor bass turd who works for a living has to pay for them and Mr. College Student gets them for free.

I took the ACT in the early 80’s. I took no prep course or did any preparation other than getting a good night’s sleep the night before. I wasn’t in the academic elite in my public high school (HATED high school,) and yet, I still scored high enough to earn college credit for English and science.

What is so special about 1991?

I am of the opinion that the student loan program should require a proficiency test be passed prior to the granting of Pell Grants and/or Student loans for college.

To wit-
Read and write at a high school level
Pre-Algebra
High school science
US Government (constitution, laws, rights, three branches)

I second your opinion. It is just abject stupidity to give students public assistance for college who have little to no possibility of graduating.

I took the ACT in the mid 80’s. It was harder than the SAT which I also took. I took it twice and did slightly worse.

Looking back, I would say the ACT validated my inward suspicions that if the truth was known I was never college material to begin with although I did somehow manage to graduate and get the degree even while battling what was then a debilitating medical situation.

Just another reason why public schools shouldn’t even exist.

I salute you for trying. I think there ARE natural inclinations toward academics that are neither a reflection on the value of the individual or his abilities in other endeavors. These are inborn.

That said, there is more to a successful college career than smarts.

For all the “charter schools”, early programs, SAT/ACT courses, etc., and we have far less education going on.

Indeed. Leftist universities are just a scam. But trade schools are good.

They’re not sending their best! ... and with the dumbing down of the exams, it’s even worse than the headline suggests.
