Qualcomm, one of the largest microchip manufacturers globally, is scaling back its workforce.

The San Diego, California-based company will be laying off about 1258 roles in California, according to a filing with the California Employment Development Department. Impacted employees include those based out of San Diego and Santa Clara in multiple roles, from engineers to legal counsel to human resources, with job reductions coming around December 13th.

The layoff news comes about a month after the company announced a deal with Apple to provide 5G chips through at least 2026. Qualcomm is also the chip supplier for the newly announced Meta Quest 3.

Let's see how smart our "betters" are.

Now in a sane world, agencies would move heaven and earth to hook up the Qualcomm employees with TSMC.

Instead, in the dysfunctional USA, we will import 4000 Chinamen for TSMC
and pay extended unemployment benefits to the former Qualcomm
employees while retraining them to work in the fast food industry.

I doubt they are scaling back production. Last I heard Qualcomm was building a new fab in Boise. It’s funny. All these chip manufacturers swear they aren’t leaving California. But Intel is building an absolutely massive new facility in Hillsboro Oregon. Samsung is building a massive new facility in Taylor Texas. And Qualcomm is building in Boise.

Qualcomm has added a lot of staff since 2019. This is not much of a cut back.

You can be sure the H1Bs will continue to be employed by Qualcomm.

I used to work for a gearbox company out of Anaheim. The Soviet Union of California ran them out of the state with all their regulations and fines. So they relocated to Beloit, Wisconsin. None of the California based employees moved to Beloit. More destruction of manufacturing jobs.
