Candidates wrangle over abortion policy in Kentucky gubernatorial debate

Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear and Republican Attorney General Daniel Cameron accused each other of taking extreme stands on abortion policy Monday night as they wrangled over an issue that's become a flashpoint in their hotly contested campaign for governor in Kentucky.

During an hourlong debate at Northern Kentucky University in Highland Heights, Kentucky, the rivals fielded questions over education, taxes, public safety and the monthlong strike by autoworkers, which has spread to Ford's highly profitable Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville.

The candidates tried to one-up the other in their support for public education. Some of their sharpest exchanges during the televised debate, however, came when asked to lay out their stands on abortion.

Their remarks, which took place about three weeks before the Nov. 7 election, came against the backdrop of Kentucky's current abortion law, which bans the procedure except when carried out to save a pregnant woman’s life or to prevent a disabling injury.

Beshear said that his challenger celebrated the abortion ban’s passage and pointed to Cameron’s long-running support for the law as written, without exceptions for pregnancies caused by rape or incest.

“My opponent’s position would give a rapist more rights than their victim," Beshear said. "It is wrong. We need to change this law. We need to make sure that those individuals have that option.”

Once Roe v. Wade was overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court, the state’s trigger law — passed in 2019 — took effect to ban nearly all abortions.

Cameron reiterated Monday night that he would sign a bill adding abortion exceptions if given the chance, a position he revealed during a radio interview last month.

Cameron went on the attack by pointing to Beshear’s opposition to abortion restrictions passed by the state’s GOP-dominated legislature.

Cameron has been getting killed by these abortion commercials.. and by the teachers. And, he’s allowing Beshear to take credit for the income tax rate cut. I mean, good grief man.. FIGHT BACK!

Single female voters. They won’t believe him. They prefer to be lied to by those that use them.

Still it’s a red state. It should be ours. The incumbent has that-incumbency. It would be a big win but a popular democrat has the upper hand.

McConnell should offer to resign upon Cameron winning the election and taking office. It might get more gop voters to show up and vote. Do it on the Thursday before the election for maximum effect, the same day the Bush DUI report came out(2000).

What’s Much Better: A GOP dominated state legislature with a Democratic governor, or A GOP dominated state legislature with a Republican governor? How much total present RINO Republicanism exists at the Kentucky state level? Who will get the blame, if any future controversies come from a GOP dominated legislature with a GOP governor? What’s the GOP governor candidate’s view of Senator Mitch McConnell?

The #ing Rats salivate on the issue of legal killing. And unfortunately they’re good at convincing young women to define their liberties in the primary form of having the right to kill.

Regrettably, the GOP exploits the Pro-Life advances by doing nothing thereafter. Kansas 2022 must never be forgotten, nor the young women expressing their displeasure with the perceive lack of freedoms.

Cameron’s only chance is to receive 2 or 3 Trump visits to the Bluegrass. Unfortunately, I doubt Trump has the time.

Of what I’ve seen recently (haven’t been watching a lot of TV), Cameron’s more recent abortion commercials do a fairly good job of catching Beshear lying. But, Cameron is not effective at all on the education issue. Why he’s afraid to take on the teacher’s unions is understandable, considering that killed former Gov. Bevin, but, he really could make some hay by digging into KY’s educational performance data, and then argue that alternatives and competition are needed.

The ads catching Beshear in lies are coming from some advocat PAC, not from Cameron.

Daniel is mostly running the same, blah ad that he probably filmed 4-5 months ago. Beshear is changing.. adapting... pounding the issues that are working: ie, Abortion, education.

How about running commercials reminding people that Beshear had State Troopers taking down license plates of people who tried to attend Church on Easter. How about ads showing Beshear OPPOSING Republican efforts to roll back income taxes. And then, expose Andy for trying take credit for it.

And.. yes... Taking on the teacher’s unions is probably a bad idea. But, you can’t just let them say you want to “take money away to give to fancy private schools”. How about, as you say, pointing out the FAILURE of our public schools and teh breakdown of our bussing system. Promote ways to improve this, and allow more neighborhood schooling.

Andy LOCKED down this state during Covid, for nothing. I haven’t seen one ad reminding people about that. Side by side with Mr. Rogers would be my approach.

It really doesn’t matter now. It’s over.

Cameron was endorsed by Trump straight out of the gate - very early.

Unfortunately a consequence of Beshear outraising Cameron by like a 4-1 margin. $20 mil vs. $5 mil makes a significant difference.

I have seen ads mentioning what you point out but they were run by super PACs / RGA supporting Cameron. Beshear also has Super PACs supporting him on top of his vast fundraising advantage.

I see but has Trump campaigned for Cameron.

In 2006 the GOP ran Lynn Swann for Governor and Ed Rendell had him for lunch. All excited about a black candidate here in Pennsylvania back then.

Kentucky has a very low African-American population just like Pennsylvania does. Just eight percent in Kentucky right now Pennsylvania has 12 percent.

Mark Robinson in North Carolina runs better at 22 percent African-American population. Is it racial?

Jeff Landry did just fine in the first round in Louisiana last Saturday with Trump endorsement.

But yeah Cameron is still Mitch’s man.

Yes. I get that. Money makes a difference. And it’s obvious now.

Just so sad that we can’t get a Republican Gov in a deep red state. 😥
