'It was him or me': Man who shot, killed Salinas cop takes witness stand

SALINAS, Calif. — The defense in the Gustavo Morales murder trial started presenting their case Monday morning, and defense attorney Michael Belter wasted no time in putting the accused killer on the witness stand as his first witness.

Morales is charged with the shooting death of Salinas Officer Jorge ‘JD’ Alvarado during a traffic stop in early 2022.

But in cross-examination, prosecutor Christopher Puck told Morales that he had 11 contacts with police between the 2018 incident and the traffic stop with Alvarado in 2022 and in each case, there was not one instance of use of force.

Morales testified he knew he would get arrested if Alvarado pulled him over. Morales was on probation, driving drunk on a suspended license and had a loaded gun, all violations of his probation.

ICE told KSBW 8 that Morales is a Mexican national who was in the country unlawfully. ICE had been aware of Morales since 2008.

Hopefully the Officer's widow has a great wrongful death attorney.

Having worked quite a bit in Silicon Valley, I have spent significant time in the area around Monterey - Pacific Grove - Carmel, all of it enjoyable. How far left and woke has that area, and Salinas, gotten?
