Georgia deputy shoots, kills Black man who spent 16 years in prison on wrongful conviction

KINGSLAND, Ga. — A Black man who spent more than 16 years imprisoned in Florida on a wrongful conviction was fatally shot Monday by a sheriff’s deputy in Georgia during a traffic stop, authorities said. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which is reviewing the shooting, identified the man as Leonard Allen Cure, 53.

Cure had been represented in his exoneration case by the Innocence Project of Florida. The group’s executive director, Seth Miller, said he was devastated by news of the death, which he heard from Cure’s family.

“I can only imagine what it’s like to know your son is innocent and watch him be sentenced to life in prison, to be exonerated and ... then be told that once he’s been freed, he’s been shot dead,” Miller said.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said a Camden County deputy pulled over Cure as he drove along Interstate 95 near the Georgia-Florida line. He got out of the car at the deputy’s request and cooperated at first but became violent after he was told he was being arrested, a GBI news release said.

The agency said preliminary information shows the deputy shocked Cure with a stun gun when he failed to obey commands, and Cure began assaulting the deputy. The GBI said the deputy again tried using the stun gun and a baton to subdue him, then drew his gun and shot Cure when he continued to resist.

I was going to say that “maybe” he was not guilty of THAT crime, but was in no way “innocent”.

It’s probably why he didn’t want to be arrested. He would be unable to get the drugs he wanted. I think it is why many people fight being cuffed. They know they will have to go through withdrawal.

A lot of “innocent” convicts are freed on technicalities.

Is that what happened to this guy? What details can you provide?

A police officer friend arrested a suspect and put the cuffs on him. The perp. struggled and managed to remove one cuff - and part of his hand with it. Turned out he was high on PCP.

Perspective - good idea.

Pity that did not happen with the likes of Rodney King.

Prosecutors aren’t the cream of the crop either. Those are in the private sector.

Maybe used the 800k to buy cocaine wholesale and delivering it for street sale when the cop pulled him over. That sounds likely.

Quite likely. Being wrongfully convicted is not the same thing as factually innocent. And even factually innocent of a particular charge or set of charges that you were wrongfully convicted on does not mean that were otherwise a law abiding and responsible citizen.

Cops and prosecutors have a simple and effective algorithm for solving most serious crimes. (1) Find suspects who might have done the crime, then try to exclude them. (2) For those who remain, focus your attention on the worst of the suspects who are known criminals or at least can be shown to have been up to no good in their lives in a way that provides a motive for the crime. (3) Charge the single best fit for the crime.

Every now and then, someone gets wrongfully convicted even though factually innocent. Yet many of them have criminal records or are shady and criminal characters who go back to crime when they get out of prison. That new criminal activity can then give someone who was wrongfully convicted but exonerated a reason to try to flee or fight the cops on a routine traffic stop.

There’s a lot to the story right here. Don’t assault people with guns before they are ready to shoot you.

Here is an example of behavior that cops and the cop organization would not tolerate if corruption and crime were not part of the culture, whether an individual participates or not, when the cop is silent about ongoing crime among his fellow cops, then he is part of the crime.

Not a word about his criminal history in all the hagiography being cranked out by the local Miami media. What a shock.
