Retail theft is the worst in these 10 US cities, study finds

(KTXL) — Retail crime has been on the rise in the U.S., forcing some major retailers to even close locations in response.

A new report shows some U.S. cities have been especially hard-hit by organized retail crime.

The National Retail Federation (NRF) — the world’s largest retail trade association, according to its website — recently released its 2023 Retail Security Survey. The report contains insights from 177 retail brands, which accounted for $1.6 trillion of annual retail sales in 2022 and represent more than 97,000 retail locations across the U.S.

Overall, retailers that participated in the survey reported that inventory loss — called shrink — clocked in at an average rate of 1.6 percent last year, representing $112.1 billion in losses. That’s up from 1.4 percent the previous year. The greatest portion of shrink — 65 percent — came from external theft, including products taken during organized shoplifting incidents.

You left the important part out :-(

Based on the reported inventory losses, the NRF found that the cities most impacted by retail theft last year were:

Los Angeles, California
Oakland/San Francisco, California
Houston, Texas
New York City, New York
Seattle, Washington
Atlanta, Georgia
Sacramento, California and Chicago, Illinois (tied)
Denver, Colorado; Miami, Florida; and Albuquerque, New Mexico

This is the fifth consecutive year that Los Angeles has topped out the list after overtaking New York City in 2018.

There been a centuries long argument about “root causes” of crime among Academics. After 3.5 years of the largest real world social science experiment in world history the answer is conclusive

People steal because they can with very little fear of punishment

I actually saw this referred to as “material liberation” in another forum.

That would explain why most of these cities are democrat hellhole cities.

The stores can fight back EFFECTIVELY, but they choose not to. For example, Walmarts that surround Harris County (where Houston is located) could post signs that remind people that shoplifting is STILL punished in their red counties and that their somewhat lower prices reflects their ‘lower cost of doing business’ (being intentionally vague on purpose) in their red counties.

Taking steps like that would get them in the news, but would also remind voters that voting for Leftists has DIRECT negative consequences, whereas voting for Trump in spite of not wanting their daughters to date him has DIRECT positive benefits (and it’s quite unlikely that Trump would be interested in their daughters anyway).

“Didn’t Houston bus in a bunch of “migrants”, after a big hurricane that cleaned out New Orleans”

Oh yeah, you can tell who they are because they still wear Saints Jerseys

But there are nearly as many of them as there are “migrants” from farther South.

I live in the Los Angeles area where this is raging out of control.

Many of my neighbors, especially elderly, swear they’ll never go to a mall again - and are even hesitant to go to the grocery store citing safety issues - they’ll order everything online instead.

Already, many of the restaurants around here are going to a pay at the counter first (via a kiosk) before you get your food, which they’ll either bring to the table or you pick up at the counter - I’m sure this is to stop rampant dash n dine. I’m seeing this more and more and more..
