U.N. report warns of catastrophic climate tipping points. California is nearing several

Humanity is on course to transgress multiple global “tipping points” that could lead to irreversible instability or the complete collapse of ecological and institutional systems, a United Nations report warned Wednesday.

The third annual Interconnected Disaster Risks report from the U.N. University’s Institute for Environment and Human Security found that drastic changes will occur if urgent actions are not taken around six moments when sociological systems are no longer able to buffer risks.

The tipping points include several issues that California is confronting head-on — groundwater depletion, rising insurance costs, extreme heat and species extinction. The other threats are melting glaciers and space debris. According to U.N. officials, “when one system tips, other systems may also be pushed over the edge.”

“The very practical consequence will be that much more people will live under very precarious conditions — so loss of life, loss of livelihood and loss of opportunities,” said Zita Sebesvari, deputy director at the U.N. University Institute.

The tipping points are growing increasingly interconnected through global supply chains, trade and communications networks, the report says.

“We are moving perilously close to the brink of multiple risk tipping points,” the report says. The good news is that it is not too late to make changes to avoid or at least delay the worst possible outcomes.

While each tipping point is a potential threat, the interconnection between them is key to the report, according to Jack O’Connor, senior expert at the U.N. University Institute and one of the lead authors. He likened the systems to towers of wooden blocks, like in the game Jenga.

“We and our behaviors are slowly removing pieces one by one from the base, until at some point the system can no longer cope with the growing instability and it collapses,” O’Connor told reporters Wednesday.

Oh, brother. What a big load of steaming manure. They just always keep the pedal to the metal with fear and hysteria.

"...rising insurance costs, extreme heat and species extinction. The other threats are melting glaciers and SPACE DEBRIS."

"Rising insurance costs" is entirely man-made through bad policies and terrible forestry practices foisted on us by the ultra-greenies and a one-party legislature that will never push back on the enviro-kooks. It could be cured very quickly by spending money on forest management rather than letting in millions of illegals and putting them up in luxe hotels.

Everybody don your SPACE DEBRIS helmets NOW!!

What, exactly, is the threat from melting glaciers"?

There are more than 1,700 snow or ice bodies located in California (70 of these are larger than 0.04 square miles). Twenty of these glaciers have been named - seven on Mount Shasta and 13 in the Sierra Nevada. Snow and ice bodies are also located in the Trinity Alps and near Mount Lassen. In total, permanent snow and ice bodies cover over 18 square miles of California.

California is 163,696 square miles big. We are supposed to be worried about the ice on 18 square miles of that melting? It would be sad to see the glaciers melt, but so what if they do? Are they going to unleash Biblical floods on California? How many people visit them? They are probably #999 out of the top 1,000 tourist spots in the state.

The article is behind a paywall. 12ft.io doesn't work, but the "Bypass Paywalls Clean" in Google Chrome gets past the paywall. But do you REALLY want to read all 1,512 words of hysteria and fear that Hayley wrote?

California should be worried about large earthquakes.

The planet is going to have the last word on that subject.

That is nothing more than a load of leftist fearmongering gobbledygook.

What 'urgent actions'? More carbon taxes? Population Zero to minus a billion or so inhabitants? Eat bugs?

The key word in that article is “could”. If you insert that word, you can claim anything you want. I think I’ll give it a try.

If the ‘Los Angeles Times’ doesn’t send me one million dollars, California could be invaded by Mars.

Waddaya think, LA Times? Better cut that check, just to be safe.

Are we down to 6.99 years left yet?

The past 10 years or so it seems stuck between 7.25 and 7.41

Climate change is real and important.

***Therefore, we should impose tariffs on all goods made in the PRC until they meet US EPA and other environmental guidelines.

What’s the probability of US legislators (some getting money from the PRC) so concerned about “climate change” to adopt such a policy?

Rising insurance are the ridiculous state policies and refs regarding insurance. How does space debris enter into this? It came from here and eventually, it falls back to here.

Slide into the ocean?......
____\

California tumbles into the sea
That’ll be the day I go back to Annandale
Tried to warn you
About Chino and Daddy Gee
But I can’t seem to get to you through the U.S. Mail
Well I hear the whistle but I can’t go, I’m gonna
Take her down to Mexico, she said oh no
Guadalajara won’t do

Well, I did not think the girl
Could be so cruel
And I’m never going back
To my old school

Dang! I forgot to check! I could not find “Jew” in the article, but it most likely in the full UN report.

The planet is going to have the last word on that subject.

Earth is about 4.5 billion years old. It managed, through a lot of geological changes, to survive. Most of that without leftists 'helping'.
