The math the authors point to is in the study that is linked at the msn article website. They are accounting for tax credits, subsidies for installing fast chargers, etc..

I see nothing wrong with your math. The problem is, there are so many variants to the equation, you are likely in a minority who comes out ahead as much as you do with EV vs gas car.

This article is a little closer to the reality of cost comparisons.

No one has added in the cost of diesel for the generators of those “public charging stations” along the highway, LOL.

More to the point of the study referenced in the article is crap like this:

“The White House has put about $135 billion toward electric vehicle development and creation and is aiming to build a national network of 500,000 EV charging stations by 2030. Tax credits included in the recently passed Inflation Reduction Act will provide consumers with incentives to buy EVs.
https://www.cnbc.com/2022/09/27/ev-charging-stations-on-highways-dot-approves-50-states-plans.html

Neither did I see anything about the subsidies of the roads themselves paid through gasoline taxes.

Tesla gets some extra subsidies for letting non Tesla EVs on their charging network as part of the program you mentioned..

For commuter cars it’s hard to beat a EV such as the cheaper Model 3 Tesla. This gets even better if your company has Level 2 chargers at work for you to use for “free” which is really part of your total compensation package at that point.

Real world example for a commute far in excess of the USA average person. 110 miles round trip vs 40 or less which is the avg commute.

2018 S60 Volvo T5 new in 3rd quarter 2018 @ $56,000 in six years 2018-2023 I have put 123,000 miles on it averaging 28mpg in traffic across 7 municipalities in the North Texas multiplex from semi rural to the central core of the mid cities area. I still own this car so capex is the whole 56K for a capex of 45 cents per mile so far. Fuel was as high as $4.2/gal or 14 cents per mile and as low as $2 its 2.65 today or 9.4 cents per mile. Fuel cost for 123,000 miles is between the two end members of $18,400 to $11,640.

A slightly used 2021 Tesla Model 3 (first year with lithium iron phosphate cells) with·25k miles is $28,000. With a 8 year 120,000 mile warranty so 95,000 miles left. Assuming zero resale value at 120,000 miles that’s a total capex of 29.4 cents per mile of the 95,000 miles remaining in the warranty and zero residual value. I can “fuel” that M3 at work every day to 100% pack level so my fuel cost would be zero. This is due to having enough range to drive the 55 miles home every night then return the 55 miles back to the work charger. I would never need to use electricity from home to power this car. That alone would save me $18 to 11 grand in fuel over the same time frame with almost half the capital costs even with a zero resale value in the Tesla which it won’t be zero.

The Volvo if I sold it today I would be worth KBB $8600/10500 trade in/private party. So it has depreciated $45,500 in six years. That’s nearly twice the total value of the model 3 I intend to replace it with. Another way to look at it is I could net cost to me a used model 3 for $18K not 28k. Dropping the full loss capex for the M3 from 29c over 95,000 miles to 18.9 cents per mile.

Tesla says the LFP packs will go 250k not 120 if you don’t drain them to near zero and supercharge tham twice a day like some uber driver did. Charging from 50% to 100% daily at one C rates LFP cells will go for tens of thousands of cycles till 80% loss of capacity.

Note the scale is logarithmic on the left.

https://www.powertechsystems.eu/home/tech-corner/lithium-iron-phosphate-lifepo4/

The S60 and the Tesla are within one inch is length and width in size and the Volvo curb weight is 1664kg (3668.5 lbs) the Tesla for this particular car is 3,627 lb (1,645 kg) ( SR+) they both ride on identical sized 235/45R18 the Volvo actually being heavier means its tire wear would be higher for identical 94V rated tires.

The Tesla also has intelligent cruise, in traffic follow mode, single pedal drive and hands free hwy cruise modes the Volvo only has adaptive cruise that won’t come to a stop or start back up again in bumper to bumper gridlock. The Tesla would come to a stop while following the car ahead hands free and start from that stop on its own when the lead car moves again. This feature alone is pricelsss in gridlock. First quarter 2024 a used model 3 enters the stable of vehicles in the household. Joining the Volvo,Ford Expedition 4x4, Ford escape hybrid, and a couple of motorcycles. This is where EV excell at being a dedicated commuter car LFP cells vs NMC like to be opportunity charged so daily shallow charging at work add life vs deep discharge cycles.
