Nikki Haley Calls to Outlaw Anonymous Social Media Accounts in Troubling Comments
Red State ^ | 11/14/2023 | Teri Christoph

If you were wondering what a President Nikki Haley would make a priority once she got to the Oval Office, wonder no more! She's going to take on ... social media?

Haley appeared Tuesday on a Fox News forum called Voters' Voices, where voters from both sides of the political spectrum had the opportunity to question her about her policies. One voter, concerned about rising antisemitism on college campuses and disinformation seeping into schools, asked Haley: "Is there a limit to free speech?"

Haley blamed the rise in antisemitic speech on the use of social media by young people. This led her to speak to how she'd handle the situation if she were to become president, laying out her top two priorities on the issue:

Priority #1: Make social media platforms disclose their algorithms.

Priority #2: Outlaw anonymous social media accounts.

What's that now? WWIII is brewing, American cities are a hellscape of crime, and families across the U.S. are being decimated by Bidenomics, but abolishing anonymous social media accounts is at the top of her presidential to-do list? That's absurd. Also, very likely unconstitutional.

TRANSCRIPT:

When I get into office, the first thing we have to do: social media accounts. Social media companies, they have to show America their algorithms. Let us see why they're pushing what they're pushing.

The second thing is: every person on social media should be verified by their name. That's, first of all, that's a security threat. When you do that, all the sudden people have to stand by what they say. And it gets ride of the Russian bots, the Iranian bots and the Chinese bots. And then you're going to get some civility when people know their name is next to what they said.

There are a few things to unpack here.

First, again, this is the priority on day one? This certainly isn't the priority of voters who struggle to afford basic necessities right now. How about a little bit of relief for them? That would be a good first thing to do.

Secondly, why bring up social media again after being on the receiving end of Vivek Ramaswamy's pointed attack on her daughter's TikTok account at last week's presidential debate? Sure, she retorted with her "scum" comment, but many thought it was valid to question Haley's stance.

Thirdly, is this plan of hers to outlaw anonymous accounts even constitutional? Many on X/Twitter were quick to call that into question.

"Anonymity is a shield from the tyranny of the majority... It thus exemplifies the purpose behind the Bill of Rights, and of the First Amendment in particular: to protect unpopular individuals from retaliation—and their ideas from suppression—at the hand of an intolerant…— Julie Hamill (@hamill_law) November 14, 2023

And many people choose to use pseudonyms to avoid being doxxed or having their employers harassed. Has Haley somehow missed that conservatives have been on the receiving end of such abuse for years? Sure, get rid of the bots, but forcing people to verify their accounts, which often isn't free, makes for terrible policy.

Lastly, she opened herself up to unflattering comparisons to New York governor Kathy Hochul, who just announced she's launching an effort to monitor social media in order to "combat hate speech." Yes, she now has a "social media monitoring unit" that is ramping up its efforts to identify "incitements to violence." We all know this means monitoring Christians, Jews, and conservatives, and it's really quite chilling.

Things are pretty bad when it's difficult to distinguish a Republican presidential candidate from a power-hungry, freedom-hating Democrat. Nikki Haley needs to delete and retreat on this terrible position.

I think Nikki Haley is getting mind-numbed by too much stress and not enough sleep.

A massive purge of big-government globalists — including some right here on FR — from the Republican Party can’t happen soon enough. It might even motivate me to join the GOP.

Yes. Why don’t we put our address, SSI number and our computer passcodes on line too? Not to mention, it would take one second for someone to figure out that all they had to do is post a fake name. This kind of stupidity is why icky Nikki makes me sicky.

Anyone, particularly a politician, who thinks problems can be solved by “passing a law” is NOT conservative.

Without my “handles” here and on X, I would be unable to make any comments on public issues because of my job. I have fewer rights than a convicted felon as it is.

It's not complicated.

Actually it gets people fired from their jobs, harassed at their homes, and possibly targeted for lawsuits by Left-wing “social justice” lawyers. But I bet Haley knows this. The fact that I’m sure she knows this should make her the target of mockery by anyone who wishes to express a political idea with any degree of safety in a public forum.

“Nikki Haley is a birdbrain.”

Nimrata Haley does not have an American state of mind. She has no IDEA what America is.

“Haley will never be President, but as a Trump supporter she needs to hang around awhile.”

She’s a Trump supporter? Trump was a Haley supporter, but she turned on him. (Much like DeSantis.)

People should stand behind what they say. There are too many on the Internet who, while hiding in their mom’s basement, love to say things to strangers they would never say to their face. People should show a little respect. And no, I am not a Nikki Haley lover for the reactionary FReepers.

I’m sure people ought to think three times before they say a lot of things whether in public or in anonymity, but I don’t want someone in Washington DC acting as the morality police telling us what to say or else....

RE: Haley was born in SC, so she is a citizen.

The issue in this forum is NOT whether a presidential candidate is a citizen but WHAT is a NATURAL BORN citizen?

That question has always sparked controversy whether the candidate was Ted Cruz, Bobby Jindal, Vivek Ramaswamy or Nikki Haley.

RE: Nimrata

Can’t anyone legally change their names and be officially known by that name?

Cassius Clay became Muhammad Ali

Marion Robert Morrison became John Wayne

Norma Jeane Mortenson became Marilyn Monroe

Warren Wilhelm Jr. became Bill De Blasio

etc. etc.

“ .what does bk1000 stand for?”

I dislike screen names and passwords. I was a longtime lurker until one day I read something that compelled me to respond. I had not given any thought to a “screen name”, which is required. I used my initials and house number and came up with bk1000. I wish I could change it, but to do so you lose years of responses and you get called a noob. I’ve been here about twenty years. I am not ashamed of anything I have posted, nor do I fear retribution from the feds for exercising my freedom of speech. I understand the need for anonymity when delivering sensitive political commentary, as the PTB often disapproves of alternate opinions. I don’t approve of idiots who get on there just to insult people. Insult me to my face or you are a sniveling coward.

Yep, that will make it quite simple for the government to prosecute anyone with ideas they don’t like.
