We wouldn't even be here if it wasn't for colonialists.
History is to learn from, not to scrub clean.

“...allegedly committed on ‘indigenous populations’ during his 1519 voyage.”

Given that the ‘indigenous populations’ killed him in what is now the Philippines, I’d say any score was pretty much settled. I am not aware of any ‘colonies’ established by Magellan.

If anyone should be canceled, it’s Karl Marx for his evil ideas that led to hundreds of millions of deaths.

Ironically, with our current levels of literacy and education most of the woke public likely has no idea who Magellan was.

No.

George Floyd is not on record as having made any comments endorsing the LGBTQ+ community. So nominating him would be “problematic.”

You know this is the next step in the renaming process.

Everyone has dark corners in their lives where their behavior - even centuries later - might offend this group or that. The acclaimed personages of today might, in a distant future time, be discovered to have offended the sensibilities of easily aggrieved snow flakes triggering complaints. To avoid this complication, the only effective counter is to demand that nothing be named after any human being, living or dead, no matter how distinguished or meritorious.

Was going to point out what you said. What colonies did Magellan, or his crew, establish? I think all but 19 of his 270 original crew died on the journey the trip.

That’s too hard! It’s easier to get published as one of the “wokerati”!

She should do “global warming”! Hansen couldn’t cut it as an astronomer, so he found his niche doing “global warming” hysteria! She will find plenty of “friendly” journal reviewers there!

Academic institutions should be renamed as mental institutions.

Why don’t you do some research and contribute something useful on the topic of astronomy?

Perhaps she is not capable of such ...

Hiring (and similar activities) on the basis of "diversity" necessarily means ignoring actual ability.

Why don't we rename Virginia, West Virginia, and New York while we're at it.

Heck, why stop there? Let's rename America, too!

I think they should name them after De Soto.

But the relatively small galaxies are under the gravitational influence of our much larger Milky Way therefore are in a way colonies of. Therefore Magellanic is entirely apt if one goes by this woke line of thinking.

First they will erase Europeans from history and then, left unchecked, they will start a campaign of genocide against Europeans.

From physics.aps.org/: Mia de los Reyes
Mia de los Reyes is an assistant professor of astronomy at Amherst College, Massachusetts. As an observational astronomer, de los Reyes studies low-mass galaxies in the nearby Universe. To her knowledge, she is the first Filipino-American professor of astronomy in the United States.

[NOTE - notice it says she is an ASSISTANT Professor then claims she is a full professor]

She's a person of little talent and no accomplishments and teaches at a second-rate school, so she has to focus on that "first." That is SO typical of liberal kooks. I'm surprised she didn't try to pawn herself off as Native American, but maybe we already have Native American professors of astronomy.

Gender Minorities and Women in PMA: I was a member of the organizing committee of Caltech Gender Minorities and Women in Physics, Math, and Astronomy, a group that aims to support folks of marginalized genders in the Caltech PMA division. I help plan and run regular events: social events, workshops, and journal clubs.

So, she's at best a C student who probably gets her grades elevated due to her minority status, has no means to contribute anything of note to the field of astronomy, and has to tear down others to make herself feel better.
