A Native American tribe in Washington state has been allowed to once again hunt gray whales - following a decades-long effort to resume the ancient practice.
The tradition has existed for more than 2,000 years, though the last time the tribe was able to hunt a member of the species was in 1999.
That hunt was allowed after a more than 70 year-stop during a rebound in the gray whale population, and saw Makah whalers successfully hunt a gray whale in the waters off the Olympic Peninsula.

If they were called the windmill tribe, libs wouldn’t care about the whales.
Thats my problem with so many of these things, some people are more equal than others.
Used to be when a tribal guy got a free new boat and outboard, that when he ran out of gas, he’s leave it and go get another free boat and outboard.
If you visit that area, it’s Indian art and symbols displayed all over the place…… does the left now call for their removal from public display?
You kill it, you eat it. Every last bite.

I wouldn’t argue about that. However, the Tribe pitched the original hunt idea to their Fed overlords as a cultural experience. They didn’t have twin screw fishing boats or Barrett Carbines back when the hunt was truly a cultural event.
The Braves were brave and fished accordingly. How does modern tools enhance or continue their “cultural heritage?” IMHO, if they want to teach their “ways” to a new generation, then teach it correctly.
I thought it was a pathetic bloodlust sideshow watching. Besides the fact most people would prefer nobody hunt Whales, I really don’t care unless they start trying to make a Whale meat market, but the waste and the fact that not a single Makah out there that day had ever butchered a whale before and it showed. That sickened me.
Same. IIRC, they are required to hunt using the methods of their forefathers instead of exploding harpoons.
Doubt they will be held to that.
At least that’s better than majestik møøse.
If PETA actually wanted more whales, they would talk up the consumption of whale meat. As long as the whales don’t fart and make stinky bubbles that rise to the surface, nobody would ever know. After all, have you ever seen a whale get emberassed and say, “excuse me!” ?
Paging Captian Kirk.
Waiting for a group citing similar grounds to request permit to kill infidels.
Comment #7 says the 1855 Treaty strictly forbids whale hunting.
I do not have a dog (uh, whale) in that fight (uh, debate), so I will you leave you to it.
I never owned a slave and never shot an Indian. Enough with the preferential treatment for these groups.
The comst8tution says we have the right to own guns too, but the left are constantly eroding that right out from under us.
If a constitutional amendment can be ignored, why not a treaty? Nothing is sacred anymore to the left. They play with one set of rules for us, and another for them.
“...the tribe’s ancestors had hunted in the region for thousands of years.”
WHAT A stupid statement.
I'd leave it to them to judge.
Besides the fact most people would prefer nobody hunt Whales
Best not to worry what "most people" think or care about.
