Just when you thought there were no parts of your life not already under the thumb of the federal government, a new idea emerges.
This time it comes from the National Transportation Safety Board and it involves outsiders having control of the gas pedal in your car.
While you're driving, of course.
The proposal from the NTSB is to install "intelligent speed assistance" tech in all cars, a system that uses a car's GPS location and local speed limit postings "to help ensure safe and legal speeds."

Charger going 60.
Hmmm, hope no one spreads #100 of roofing nails in his driveway. For traction in the snow and ice.
Y’all such thoughtful people.
This would have worked well during our fires.

New Recommendations
To the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration:
1. Requireasstandardequipmentinallnewvehiclesintelligentspeed assistance systems that, at a minimum, warn the driver when the vehicle exceeds the speed limit.
2. Developacommunicationplantoeducatethepublicaboutthe capabilities and benefits of intelligent speed assistance to mitigate speeding.
3. UpdatetheUniformGuidelinesforStateHighwaySafetyProgramsto include identification and tracking of repeat speeding offenders.
4. Developcountermeasurestoreducespeedingrecidivism, determine their effectiveness, and then disseminate the results.
5. Conductresearchanddevelopguidelinestoassiststatesin implementing pilot intelligent speed assistance interlock programs, limiting the vehicle speed, for repeat speeding offenders.
To the 50 States, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia:
6. Implementprogramstoidentifyrepeatspeedingoffendersand measurably reduce speeding recidivism.
To BMW Group, Ferrari USA, Ford Motor Company, General Motors Company, American Honda Motor Company, Hyundai USA, Kia Motors Corporation, Mazda USA, Mercedes-Benz USA, Mitsubishi Motors, Nissan USA, Porsche Cars North America, Stellantis, Subaru of America, Toyota Motor North America, Volkswagen Group, and Volvo Car Corporation:
7. Installasstandardequipmentinallnewvehiclesintelligentspeed assistance systems that, at a minimum, warn the driver when the vehicle exceeds the speed limit.
To the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety:
8. Evaluatethesafetyoutcomesofmarketingbyautomobile manufacturers that emphasizes risky driving behaviors, including speeding. The evaluation should, at a minimum, compare vehicles based on engine size, power, and performance, and international approaches to such marketing. Publish a publicly available report.
Will a Nervous Nellie who is driving 10 MPH below the speed limit automatically have their car speed up to match the flow of traffic?

That's the goal. Get more people into big cities.
I see a 15 minute city in you future. NOT! F THAT!
If TPTB can control the accelerator, they can assassinate the driver / passengers and make it look like an accident.
Zee plan iz verkink!
Taxpayers might be surprised at how many employees and members of the NTSB don’t drive cars.
The suburb/city next to me working their way to being a “smart” city. Something to do with integrated technology in everything. I think it is part of/in addition to the 15-minute city thing.
“These are active shocks and struts controlled by a computer.”
I’ve had several vehicles made since then, and none of them have or had active shocks or struts.
There was/is a murder investigation for a woman recently found dead (buried) in Colorado. She went missing 2 or 3 years ago and suspected her husband. They found lots of evidence back then but not enough to take it to trial.
It was amazing the information they got from his truck (2018 model??). When the doors were opened and closed, time and direction he turned, even that he backed up 97 feet in his driveway (based on the gear motion). And lots more.
Even his Bobcat excavator had a record of when it was turned on and when it was in gear!
You are correct. There are moments when exceeding the speed limit is warranted.
A short burst of speed can be required to avoid an accident.
If the speed limit is 65 or 70 mph and you are driving at 85 for many miles, weaving to get ahead of all in sight, on the road, that is seen but never warranted.
Big Brother is wrong, as usual. Leave my gas pedal alone!
The forced use the technology in 2009 began with active shocks & struts vs passive to reduce body roll.
Point was a law to require such.
There was also a passed law that all vehicles were to have their headlights active when windshield wipers were deployed, but I did not know what happened to that legislation due to closing my shop in โ09 (Obama Care).
A few years back I had a chat with a highway patrol chick. She acknowledged that in order to safely pass a vehicle that one needs to exceed the speed limit occasionally. She said this applies more so to large trucks. I also knew in this state they give you about 8 mph or so over the speed limit before considering a ticket.
Now with all that said, it’s dumb as hell, to include very unsafe, to electronically govern the speed of any vehicle.
Now this can be over ridden by a savvy vehicle owner simply by disabling the car’s GPS and wireless features. It will mean just about any wireless feature will not work, such as the door locks, radio, On Star to name a few. Personally I’ve survived in older vehicles without all this crap. It’s really soothing to be just driving along with no noise or other distractions at all, including the radio or nav device. Paper maps still work for me.
We used to mess around with go-karts as teens. The first thing we’d do was disable the governor. Faster! Faster! :)
I do not know changes in automotive legislation after 2009 when I closed my shop (Obama Care).
“This will kill people.”
That’s a feature, not a bug. ;)
Get on da bus!
This will kill people in rural areas.
In a medical emergency you cannot wait for an ambulance. You take them to the emergency room yourself or meet the ambulance on the way.
You don’t drive the speed limit when you have 50+ miles to cover in a limited time.
If this policy is enacted and someone dies because of it... there will have to be consequences.
If the speed control system is overridden I suspect it will be like the emission control systems on diesel trucks... the car engine will be derated and go into limp mode.
Imagine trying to get anywhere if that limp setting is 5 mph.
