GAZA/ISRAEL-GAZA BORDER, Nov 24 (Reuters) - Hamas fighters released 24 hostages on Friday during the first day of the war's first truce, the Red Cross said, including Israeli women and children and Thai farm workers.
Nine hours after guns fell silent for the first time in seven weeks, the International Red Cross said it had begun an operation to facilitate the transfer of hostages in Gaza to Israel in return for Palestinians held in Israeli jails. It later said 24 hostages had been freed in Gaza.
"The deep pain that family members separated from their loved ones feel is indescribable. We are relieved that some will be reunited after long agony," said Fabrizio Carboni, the International Committee of the Red Cross's regional director for the Near and Middle East.
Israeli media reported that 13 women and children had been handed over to the Red Cross and to an Egyptian security team assisting their release. The Israeli government and Hamas did not immediately confirm this.
In addition to the Israeli women and children due to be released on the first day of the four-day truce, Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said in a social media post that a separate group of 12 Thai workers had been freed.
A source briefed on the negotiations said the release of the Thais, who were all men, was unrelated to the truce negotiations and followed a separate track of talks with Hamas mediated by Egypt and Qatar. Thai farmworkers employed in southern Israel were among around 240 hostages dragged back to Gaza by gunmen when Hamas fighters launched a killing spree on Oct. 7. The source said the number of Thais released could be 11 or 12.

Wasn’t it supposed to be 50?
I wonder how many are still alive...
You can bet those women were gang raped before they released them just like the ones still there.
Supposed to be 50 over 4 days. But would be surprised if that held.
While keeping other family members in custody so that the released folks won’t be able to say anything.
Probably been told to go out and say how well they were treated or their family will be killed.
Looks like it was Israeli kids and some Thai workers released.

What happened to the other 25? I thought the deal was for 50.
Thailand came up with their own deal to coincide with the Israeli release.
Probably gave Hamas a bunch of money. Which they will use to rearm.
Now Hamas will drag out the release of the rest of the hostages over months while they regroup.
Should have been all or nothing.
That deal was supposed to start yesterday, so hamas already broke it.
That’s it?!?!?!?!?!
Good point.
“We were treated well” is what released hostages are always told to say by captors even in bank robberies and cases of soldiers in captivity with others still held.
“First batch.”
Idiots.
No. Only 13 Israels today in the deal. The Thai workers part of a side deal unrelated.
50 hostages over four days ... then what? Go back to “normal” until the next time a better-armed Hamas continues their stated objective of erradicating Israel and exterminating the Jews? Everyone who has been following this and who knows this is a religious — not a political — war knows damn-well Hamas, Hezbollah, et al. will not stop until they achieve their centuries-old objectives.
Question.
There are hundreds, if not thousands, of people getting killed every day in this war. Why are the lives of a few hostages more important than the others?
Are they math challenged or just typical duplicitous islamo-fascists?
This was never a good deal from the start. The IDF needs to continue its work of neutralizing Hamas and clearing the tunnels. No good can come of a cease fire and permitting Hamas to restock supplies.
Day 48 of Biden Hostage Crisis and NO AMERICAN HOSTAGES RELEASED.
Why would Americans be in Gaza?
Because they are victims, not combatants and supporters of combatants. Every member and supporter of Hamas should be marked for death.
