After the Roman Empire collapsed Europe descended into the dark ages during which the organizing structure of society was feudalism. Under feudalism the masses (serfs) were little more than slaves to their lord. The lord, his family, and favored retainers lived inside the protective walls of the castle where they enjoyed the trappings of luxury. The serfs, who had nothing, lived in hovels outside the castle where they toiled in the field for the lord. Outside the walls they were vulnerable to roving bands of criminals. When invading barbarians or armies came to attack the castle, the serfs would be slaughtered in defense of the castle.
Pretty much describes where we are headed as civilization collapses around us.
