All-Dem NM Supreme Court upholds Dems’ gerrymandered ‘Frankenmap’
The Piñon Post ^ | November 27, 2023 | Piñon Post staff

In an unsurprising turn of events, the all-Democrat New Mexico Supreme Court upheld New Mexico’s extremely gerrymandered congressional map, dubbed by many as the “Frankenmap.”

The Court dismissed claims by the GOP that it favored Democrats excessively. The lawsuit, filed by New Mexico Republicans, argued that the state legislature’s redrawing of the map amounted to a Democratic gerrymander, violating the state’s constitution. This redistricting occurred before the 2022 midterms, and the alterations aimed to shift the 2nd Congressional District, previously leaning Republican, toward a more Democratic profile.

The contested district is currently held by Democrat Rep. Gabe Vasquez*, who secured victory in 2022 against Republican Congresswoman Yvette Herrell by a margin of 0.7 percentage points. In 2020, Joe Biden carried the district by approximately 6 points. In the prior map, 45th President Donald Trump had won the district by nearly 12 points.

Despite the GOP’s legal efforts, the New Mexico Supreme Court rejected the lawsuit, marking another redistricting loss for Republicans. The party had sought a “partisan-neutral” redraw, but the court did not uphold this request. A trial court had previously determined that while the map favored Democrats, it didn’t meet the threshold for an “egregious” gerrymander.

Herrell is running again to reclaim the seat despite the extremely gerrymandered district that chopped conservative areas in as many as thirds to help Democrats swing the state for all-Democrat control. The former congresswoman has the support of all the GOP leadership in the House and chairmen of key committees.

*Vasquez is a far-left radical who fits in the radical Dems in the House.

Republicans don't have a chance as the Dems cut up reliably conservative NM-2 by putting concentrations of Pub voters into overwhelming Dem controlled NM-3. The Franken map puts most parts of conservative Lea County in SE NM (including most of the oil patch city of Hobbs) in NM-3, which now runs from Southeast NM adjacent to Texas to Northeast New Mexico then west adjacent to Colorado to Northwest New Mexico adjacent to Arizona. Besides most of Hobbs, it includes Clovis, Raton, all of Hispanic northern NM (including far-left "progressive" Santa Fe), Farmington and the Navajo Reservation. In addition, it moves poor areas of ABQ's south valley (formerly NM-1) into NM-2 and moves parts of conservative Roswell into NM-1.

The Republican party was expecting this outcome and now will move to the Federal Courts which recently have examined gerrymandering in North Carolina, Alabama and other states.

2022 New Mexico U.S. House election results (map included)

It's good to see the GOP at least trying to fight back against Democrat gerrymanders.

Republican maps have been routinely stomped by liberal judges, just because of "intent" to draw the lines to favor themselves (gasp!); the NM Democrat party vowed back in *2020*, about 10 minutes after the election results came in, that they were going to destroy Yvette Harrell's district (I'd call that "intent") -- and they sure did.

“Disgraceful. dimcraps and leftists have no qualms about disenfranchising the American people.”

In this case, they even deliberately disenfranchised a *minority*!!! (Republican rep. Yvette Harrell was the only Cherokee-American in Congress.)

Apparently only DEMOCRAT minorities are entitled to be gifted seats in Congress.

I’m a bit surprised the Democrats didn’t include parts of Mexico in District 2. After all, Ciudad Juárez would have given the Democrats a nice voter bump.

Oh, well. I guess the residents of Ciudad Juárez will just have to walk a few miles north to participate in the next US election.

Link to Abq Journal article and quote:

New Mexico Supreme Court upholds Democratic-drawn congressional map The New Mexico Supreme Court has upheld a Democratic-drawn congressional map that divvied up a conservative, oil-producing region and reshaped a swing district along the U.S. border with Mexico

State District Court Judge Fred Van Soelen had ruled in October that recent changes to New Mexico's congressional districts do not violate the state constitution. ... Democrats gained a 12% advantage in voter registrations over Republicans in the newly drawn 2nd District, where major party registration previously was roughly evenly split, Judge Van Soelen noted.

Yet his court and the state supreme court said the gerrymander wasn't "egregious".

Why is it that republicans are so horribly bad at this game of politics? Even though the democrats ideas are all terribly horrid the R’s keep getting their asses handed to them. They outplayed the R’s by getting the SC to an all democrat panel.

Way to go stupids.

The Bolsheviks conquered the Soviet Union because they were the most ruthless faction. They weren't the most numerous or popular.

The Democrats are just following the lead of the Bolsheviks.

I'm sure it will as before that, there needed to be a trial record of attempts in state courts to rectify the gerrymandering before it could move to the federal system.

Because it’s hard to beat Santa Claus!
Rats promise whiskey & car keys for all, Republicans say go clean your room!

Also, almost no one except Rat activists pays any attention to the state judicial elections. That’s the damage can be done and Rat control can either be gained or maintained!

The Bolsheviks conquered the Soviet Union because they were the most ruthless faction.

When the Bolsheviks overthrew the provisional government in 1917, they were a minority, but during the Russian Civil War (1917-1923), the Red Army outnumbered the White Army by about 5 to 1 at their peak strengths. It's actually sort of miraculous the White Russians were able to fight on as long as they did.

Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War

The Whites did receive some help from the Allies during the Russian Civil War.
