Israel Considers How to Remove Threat of Hamas Fighters in Gaza-U.S. and Israeli officials, citing Beirut precedent, discuss idea of exiling militants from enclave

TEL AVIV—As Israeli forces prepare for a renewed offensive targeting Hamas’s top leaders in the Gaza Strip, Israeli military and political leaders are confronting the challenge of what to do about the thousands of fighters that represent the group’s power base.

To address that challenge, some Israeli and U.S. officials are discussing the idea of expelling thousands of lower-level militants from the Palestinian enclave as a way to shorten the war. The idea is reminiscent of the U.S.-brokered deal that allowed Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and thousands of fighters to flee Beirut during Israel’s 1982 siege of the Lebanese capital.

The prospect of expelling Hamas fighters is part of evolving Israeli and American talks about who will run Gaza when the war ends and what can be done to ensure that the territory can never be used to stage another attack on Israel like the one on Oct. 7, the worst in the nation’s history.

One proposal for how to govern a post-Hamas Gaza, developed by the Israeli military’s think tank and viewed by The Wall Street Journal, would start with the creation of what it calls “Hamas-free safe zones” that would be ruled by a new Gaza authority backed by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Separate U.S.-Israeli discussions about moving Hamas fighters and their families out of the Gaza Strip aim to provide some Hamas fighters with an exit strategy and make it easier to rebuild Gaza once the fighting ends.

Palestine Liberation Organization Chairman Yasser Arafat, wearing a kaffiyeh, is seen in this 1982 picture in Beirut, surrounded by heavy security as he leaves the Israeli-occupied city for Tunisia.

Worth remembering since Arafat left a significant number of fighters behind things haven't gone well for the Paris of the Middle East. As to Arafat, he was in the sights of Israeli snipers but authorization to fire never came.

It’s just my opinion but I believe Israel is making a big mistake to rely on anyone’s advice from this US administration. Furthermore, why should the US be involved at all? Why not make the UN (ahem) step up and do their job for once? It should be the UN and not the US.

That is like lancing a boil and then spreading the foul puss all over your body - it will only create more boils.

Shoot dead all the militants as you find them.

My plan would be simple: Glass all of Gaza.

“ Shoot dead all the militants as you find them.”

Our government is infested with some of the dumbest “smart people” in human history. Allowing Arafat and his goons to take root in Lebanon led directly to the mess that country is in today.

The KTAN solution is the only thing that will work.

Every one of those Hamas fighters have “peaceful” relatives all over Gaza and the West Ban, and Israel itself(!) rooting them on and ready to turn. There is only one way to solve this.

This is the essence of Islam: Kill all the Jews. Right back at Ya’. Time for Hamas to reap what they sow. In Spades.

Wherever you export them to, they will cause havoc there too.

Hamas and other such groups are simply good Muslims doing as the Holy Koran commands them.

In their world, bad Muslims are those who do not fight Jihad and just want to get on with their lives.

They are indoctrinated by what is written in Arabic and in true translations of the Holy Koran.

Then this needs to be required reading in all high schools and colleges.

Every Jew and every American, well for that matter, every European needs to read a true translation of the Holy Quran or Koran.

Then they might understand why this is happening and why it will never stop happening. IMHO these are probably the most accurate translations, and they are FREE.

Please save copies of this in case it is removed from Gutenberg.

So far it has been there for over 30 years.

If people would only read it to understand what we are up against.

If you’re going to exile them, it matters where you’re going to exile them to.

I wonder if the Brits would let them use part of South Georgia Island?

A major problem. Most of Europe is fed up with Arab immigration. Turkey and Iran won’t have them. Nor will most of the Arab world. Maybe there’s an island in Indonesia or Malaysia, but I doubt they want them either. I won’t mention Jordan or Lebanon, they won’t assimilate those who already live there.
