We have speed monitors. The Highway Patrol, and the local police.

Incorrect…
Fingernails - maintenance. (1) Food employees shall keep their fingernails trimmed, filed, and maintained so the edges and surfaces are cleanable and not rough. (2) Unless wearing intact gloves in good repair, a food employee may not wear fingernail polish or artificial fingernails when working with exposed food.

Speeding is against the law. It’s two large, easy to read numbers on a sign. I simply can’t understand why the vast majority of folks don’t understand or obey it.

Speed limits are an attempt to come up with a one-size-fits-all solution to the question of what speed is safe on a particular stretch of road. "Safe" speeds vary according to the road, weather conditions, lighting, vehicle condition, driving skill, and plenty of other factors. There are times when it's dangerous to try to drive as fast as the posted limit, and there are lots more times when the average driver can go over that speed and still stay within acceptable levels of risk for himself and others on the road. Most drivers can judge whether the posted speed is appropriate to the circumstances of the moment, and they do exactly that, while also considering the risk of getting a ticket.

Maybe because the posted speed limit is not an absolute in terms of safety.

I.e., every time I drive, especially on the highway, I see hundreds of people going over the limit but they don’t have accidents. How is this possible?

Also, speed cameras have millions of pictures of cars going over the limit (actually most are set to snap at 12+ over), yet there are no pictures of accidents. Again, how is this possible?

Maybe it’s because going over the posted limit is not that big a deal as people want to make it out to be.

LOL. You are correct. I challenge you to find one on butt hair, and if you do you’re the King of the World.

But that doesn’t apply to MY fingernails, so they’re not regulated. Neither is my butt hair. And if anyone tries they’ll quickly see the “uncivilized” finger attached to a non-regulated fingernail

Not sure what any of this has to do with speed monitoring or limits, but hey — you do you. But don’t speed.

Ha, well, some butt hair may be ok, but depending on how close it is to the exit point, it may be subject to public nudity laws.

Because the law is an ass. In many places the speed limit is 20mph too low for the road and conditions and everybody knows it.

Then work to have it changed, like any other law you may dislike or disagree with. If you think it's unreasonable, change it. Until then, it's the law, and it's a really, really easy one to follow. I do it every time I drive, without question or issue.

And yet speeding is the leading cause of traffic accidents in my state, followed by aggressive, drunk or distracted driving.

I don't speed, and I've never had a traffic accident. How is this possible?

Is there no one in our government who will just tell these SOBs NO?

Speeding is associated with every accident because if two objects are not moving, there is no way to have a collision.

You haven’t had an accident, not because of not exceeding the posted speed limit, but by not exceeding speed based on actual road conditions, e.g. a posted limit of 20 is way too high for an ice covered road.

Speed is rarely the sole cause of an accident. When it is, it’s much higher than the posted limit, otherwise people would be skidding out of curves much more frequently. The real causes, such as some form of distraction or obscured visibility are the real culprits.

All the older vehicles will be going down the freeway at 75, the new cars will be at 55 mph. And every time they exceed 55, the drivers butt will receive jolts of electricity which will be built into the drivers seat.

Perhaps you should use public transportation, sounds like driving is too frightening.

Your fingernail is attached to your body, which is highly regulated, taxed, monitored and controlled.

“Don’t speed.”

Don’t tell people what to do. MYOB. THAT’S the American way!

Control Freaks (Socialists) love to tell others what to do.

Freedom Lovers mind their own business, and strongly desire that others do the same.

Control Freaks v Freedom Lovers is the REAL battle going on.

Which group do you belong to?

You people crack me up. I’m fine with driving. Raced carts and cars when I was younger — where you’re allowed to race them.

But when I would like to see folks actually FOLLOW THE LAW everyone seems to lose their minds. Honestly, this is a textbook example of why the world has so many problems.

And so is breaking the law, apparently. The speed limit is the law, not a suggestion, and if I'm a control freak for wanting folks to follow the law so be it. The world needs more folks who want the law to be followed, not fewer.

Besides, I thought we were supposed to be the "law and order" crowd. Obeying speed limit falls under both law and order.

Are you saying the speed limit laws don't matter, are there just to punish folks others dislike, and should be done away with entirely?

Yes. Exactly so.

They are mostly a revenue generation scheme for local governments, or a pretext used by police to stop suspicious characters for an "interview". And maybe some other kind of citation and a fine.

Try driving any state highway in Missouri, but particularly state highway 50 through the town of Lone Jack. Or anywhere around St Louis. Speed limits enable banditry under color of authority and uniform. The border between Arizona and California is another zone of official predation.

No, I did not get any speeding tickets in any of those places. I am too paranoid and too careful. My infallible system is that I don't speed. But I hate bandits in uniform.

I would concede that speed limits are useful around schools and parks where children gather. That is one area where I would support enforced speed limit laws.

Active road construction areas are another area where I would support temporary enforced speed limits.

In other areas, I mostly see people around me driving at sensible speeds for the weather and traffic conditions. It is a matter of self-preservation to do that. The speed limits are self-enforcing.

The folks who cause the most trouble are the very aggressive drivers who zip in and out of traffic lanes in order to beat everyone else to the next red light stop. I hate those guys just like everybody else does, but the cops never seem to catch them. The speed limit laws aren't doing any good in that situation.

To be sure, the speed limit laws are very low on my list of laws we should be removing. There are lots of worse laws that should be discarded before them.
