Sandra Day O’Connor, an Arizona rancher's daughter who went on a distinguished trailblazing legal career, was "the most qualified woman" then-President Ronald Reagan "could possibly find" to appoint to the Supreme Court in 1981, according to a Reagan historian.

An accomplished politician turned jurist, O’Connor had been the first female majority leader of the Arizona Senate. Following her legislative work, she turned to the judiciary, serving as a county court judge before being appointed to the Arizona Court of appeals.

During his 1980 presidential campaign, President Reagan made a promise to appoint a woman to the Supreme Court bench. In O'Connor, Reagan found something of a kindred spirit, according to one biographer.

still waiting for the reversal of discrimination policies that still proliferate across this country....especially in colleges and employment where a college or business can openly refuse white applicants purely on their race....

yeah that Sandra O'Connor who was a yellow bellied judge who wouldn't stand up for the constitution and allowed continued discrimination .....what did she say at the time?....another 25 yrs or so to fix the problem...

It was obviously a politically-motivated appointment and she was a terrible justice blocking the stoppage of the infanticide. Generally equivocal females make lousy judges and Justices.

Wasn’t Judge Robert Bork available at that time? He was the most qualified candidate of his time.

“ Then, in 1989, O’Connor refused to join four other justices who were ready to reverse Roe v. Wade with the case of Webster v. Reproductive Services.”

Lesson learned: DEI hires don’t work out in the end, not even for Reagan

Loved Reagan like most of us here but he also inflicted Anthony Kennedy on us.

Pro-abortion activist on the bench and pro-porn activist as well. She was a key vote to overturn community standards restricting sexually explicit “entertainment.” Not a legacy to be proud of.

Sure, there could have been worse picks but why not go with the best rather than a gender/racial/ethnic pick?

Her recognition relates only to being a woman.

Because of personal bias and spite she got revenge on males for being passed over in her early law career for a man.

Cheap revenge for her own inferior talents.

How?
The deciding vote to allow discrimination against males in the landmark affirmative action case.

Boys and men suffered discrimination in education and professions all these years because of her.

Her punishment will be in the next world as we didn’t do anything in this one.

“who went on a distinguished trailblazing legal career, was “the most qualified woman” then-President Ronald Reagan “could possibly find””

I’d rather have the most qualified person. But I guess having a V is important.

At that time, the symbolism of appointing a woman the Supreme Court was considered important.

Similar to how Joe Biden pledged to have a black woman appointed, which is how we have Ketanji Brown Jackson on the Supreme Court.

As I recall, the liberals of that day liked to say that Republicans were racist and sexist and all that. They still do. But Reagan’s response was to appoint a woman to the Supreme Court, which was apparently supposed to make the point that the Republicans weren’t sexist.

So there you have it. Republicans can do affirmative action type appointments as well as Democrats.

That’s nice. So we got a mediocre mind, and a liberal to make a point. All because she has the right plumbing.
