San Francisco police accused of 'racial bias' in arrest of armed suspect firing at them on bodycam

A group of San Francisco police officers has been accused of "racial bias" in connection with the August 2022 arrest of a mentally ill man who pulled out a realistic prop gun and fired off multiple blanks, resulting in a 53-minute standoff that ended without anyone being hurt.

Bodycam shows police repeatedly shouted at Corvera to drop the weapon and warned passersby to stay back.

"Drop that gun on the floor or you will be shot," one officer shouts. "Put it on the floor!"

Corvera fired blanks over the course of the standoff, and at least 17 officers responded to the situation. Four of them fired at least 15 shots, according to court documents. However, they never struck Corvera, only surrounding cars and buildings. They also called in tactical units and crisis negotiators.

During the standoff, officers crouched behind the ballistic shield can be heard telling each other where they keep their tourniquets, in case of the "worst case scenario."

When Corvera finally tossed the gun away, it went off one last time. Officers rushed over and cuffed him, and paramedics rushed in, checking him for any injuries.

I watched the entire 5 minute video. I started to count how many times the police told him to drop the gun, but I lost count after about 13 times.

San Francisco deserves whatever happens to it.

I thought it was the Babylon Bee headline, until I saw that the SFPD marksmen “stormtroopers” didn’t have the white galactic uniforms on.

***a mentally ill man who pulled out a realistic prop gun***

Proof again the mental hospitals closed in the 1970s need to be reopened.

I know they think differently than I but what exactly is the rationale for the police to keep protecting the people who dwell in San Francisco?

It is not worth the police officers’ lives. Or their risk of being put in prison for some deviation from what the anti-police review boards want.

From BrotherMobileSolutions.com (sells police tech equipment as devices for eCitations for traffic stops)

While only 29% of the American public says that their job makes them feel frustrated, 51% of officers say this.

The amount of police officers in service has decreased while the population has increased. This means that police officers must serve more people than before, but may have less personnel to do so.
The increased risk—and scrutiny—that police officers face is not going unnoticed by potential recruits. According to a September 2022 study conducted by the National Fraternal Order of Police, the number of police officers shot on duty is up 6%....And the public image of law enforcement has been in the spotlight. Increased scrutiny of police, cellphone recordings of interactions, and negative media coverage may drive away the younger generation.

Generational differences mean that Millennials and Gen Z-ers may be less interested in the labor-intensive requirements of public service work. According to IACP, the incoming workforce is more likely to prioritize work-life balance than Baby Boomers. Mandatory overtime, overnight shifts, and working holidays may deter younger generations.

The image of a police officer walking the beat in their neighborhood is gone, replaced with the image of an officer parked in an empty parking lot and working on administrative tasks, with officers in the US spend around three hours every shift on manual paperwork.

There are many causes for the degradation of police performance but a major one is certainly the “Ferguson effect” wherein officers simply don’t respond for fear that no matter what they do they are vulnerable to criticism, even harsh legal action. It’s a disgrace.

They should be fired just for that.

That's pretty impressive shooting on the part of the police.

Uh, perhaps it's the job for which they are being paid.

It's also pretty apparent that none of them spend much time at the range, given the description in the article.
