General Motors’ autonomous vehicle subsidiary, Cruise, has announced the layoff of 24 percent of its workforce as part of a strategic restructuring focused on a single market for its disastrous robotaxis.

UPI reports that Cruise, the robotaxi startup owned by General Motors, has revealed significant staff reductions in a recent blog post. Thursday’s announcement details the layoff of 24 percent of its full-time employees. This decision, according to the company, is due to a strategic shift to simplify and concentrate its efforts. The focus now is to launch an exceptional service in one city initially, using the Bolt platform as a starting point before planning any further expansion.

Let me guess - nothing but raises for the Suits that are responsible for this failure.

What’s worse than a CF? A F’in CF, or FCF for short. 🤣

My guess from long range is, some on the Board of Dir. who had a thread of comm9n sense instead tried to curry good favor with the babe (Marry Barra) and didn’t have the cajones to tell a women she was full of chit about EVs.

Don’t want to be labeled as mysogynistic .

EVs are a mistake. Maybe someday, but that’s quite a long way off.

It is a really bad idea to make a global warming true believer the head of a Car Company. That is what GM did.

Worse than that. Barra claimed that the future of the auto industry was electric and autonomous.

In addition to all their EV problems, GM is losing $2 billion a year on autonomous (Cruise LLC). Ford and VW have ditched their autonomous efforts and Tesla just had 2 million vehicles recalled due to Autopilot problems.

Barra is a global warming believer as well as a techno-fool.

“Tesla just had 2 million vehicles recalled due to Autopilot problems.”

Tesla just had 2 million vehicles recalled due to misuse of Autopilot.

OTA fix.

Correct. The autopilot works pretty well but it’s not meant to be driven unmonitored. You aren’t supposed to take a nap, play video games, or use it to drive your drunk ars home. I have a friend who loves his Tesla. He told me he attached a paperweight to the steering wheel and that is (or was) enough tension to fool the system into thinking his hands were on the wheel. Says he does this all the time when he has to commute.

As for the “recall”, I think this word is used because the bureaucracy doesn’t have another word for it. None of the cars are going back to any shop. Tesla is just sending out an update to the software via wifi to increase the sensitivity hoping more people will actually have their hands on the wheel.

But at some point, with autopilot technology (from any maker) and drive-by-wire technology the car could conceivably not need a steering wheel at all. That is the promise of the tech. Autopilot will get better, and cars will be able to communicate with other cars on the road which will alleviate congestion and erratic driving. GM may not have the best software for it. Some of these cars can be disabled very easily by dropping a couple of traffic cones around it. But soon enough the federal government will want to regulate all of it - control your speed, look at your face with internal cameras, install technology to ensure you’re not drunk, and shut off your car remotely among other forms of control.

Coming to all cars jn a few years. Republicans tried to kill existing law last month but too many sided with the democrats.

Passed in 2021 Infrastrucure bill.

Assuming the technology exists. They are playing a sort of double-game here. They don’t want to allow automated driving to proceed at the pace it can be safely developed but at the same time they want to implement a whole host of other controls - and there is little financial incentive to develop things like “breathalyzers” or “eyeball monitors”. They can mandate it, but that doesn’t mean it can be reliably developed, deployed at scale, or that it can’t be bypassed or hacked.

But I’m sure the first thing they will want is the ability to shut off your car via remote. Which is probably very easy to implement with electric cars controlled by software and wifi.

Laid off but had they kept their jobs they would have had the big raises the UAW strike won for them.

Not enough suckers found to buy EVs. So the workers who didn’t make any decisions pay for the bosses’ woke stupidity.
As usual.

Not too surprised that Democrats would want that kind of technology even though it would probably introduce more defects than anybody realized was possible. These are supposed to be educated people, so why can’t they sit down & figure out the possible defects in such a system? Did they all graduate from Harvard?
