The Fantasy of the Fun TV Dad
NYT ^ | 12 08 2023 | Amanda Hess

In the first episode of “Bluey,” the Australian children’s series about an animated family of blue heelers, the mama dog, Chilli, drives off to work, leaving her husband, Bandit, to care for the pups. They play a game requiring Bandit to freeze in increasingly silly scenarios — fingers in his nose, sock on his tail, garden hose blasting him right in the face. Much of the series is a showcase for Bandit’s virtuosic performances in his daughters’ imaginative schemes. In subsequent episodes, he serves as their beleaguered hospital patient, beleaguered robot, beleaguered horse.

“Bluey” has been praised for its rare and complex depiction of parents, and Bandit has been commended as an exceptional father. Tribute is paid in Bandit Facebook groups, Bandit memes and custom Bandit fan merchandise. He is a fun dad who does housework, too. In one episode, he dances into the kitchen, shouts “What’s up, party people?” and plops a basket of freshly folded laundry on the floor.

I don’t know how he keeps house, works as an archaeologist and serves as a full-time prop artist to his daughters, but he does it all while only feigning complaint. He is not only a good father — he is a fantasy, one crafted to appeal to adults as much as to children.

As I watch the show over my 3-year-old son’s shoulder, I wonder what Bandit says about the latent desires of the parents queuing up the show. (More than 100 episodes are streaming on Disney+, with more arriving in January.) After all, when I turn on “Bluey,” I am being very un-Bandit — I am not engaged in focused play that follows my child’s imagination wherever it leads. I am cleaning. My son is staring at a screen.

One can only assume Amanda Hess had a horrible childhood and she wants her kid and your kids to be as unhappy as she was. The depiction of a happy, normal, intact family leaves her questioning her own home-life.

Bluey is by far one of the best animated series for little kids these days. It is entirely wholesome and as far as I can tell, utterly devoid of woke BS. My kids love it, and in their limited allowed TV time, there are many, many worse things they could be allowed to watch.

I watch the show with my 2 Y/O grandson. I sometimes laugh so hard.... So much adult humor.

Back in the beginning, Sesame Street had a lot of adult humor - until the Woke took over.

The folks in OZ have yet to fall for that crap.

My grandson loves Bluey. The left absolutely hates that it portrays a nuclear family, even if it is a family of cartoon dogs.

The mother driving off to work and leaving the father to be the housekeeper sound “full of woke” to me.....

I’ve seen it a few times with my granddaughter. When you think about it most cartoons have the mother as housewives... starting with the Flintstones then The Simpsons then Family Guy I could go on and on.

The fact that Chilli goes to work in an office and dad works from home doesn’t really jump out at you. It does indicate that Dad is extremely versatile and can work from home while doing housework which most women seem to have a problem with. I’m semi retired and used to work full time in an office. I’m busier now working from home running husband’s HVAC biz, the rental properties and housekeeping than ever before!

My DIL, currently a stay at home mom with Dad deployed to Saudi Arabia until April has beem known to make disparaging marks about Cocomelon though which I can completely understand.
