A large cargo ship with a fire in its hold is being kept 2 miles (3.22 kilometers) offshore of an Alaska port as a precaution while efforts are undertaken to extinguish the flames, the U.S. Coast Guard said Saturday.

There were no injuries to the 19 crew members aboard the Genius Star XI, which was carrying a load of lithium-ion batteries across the Pacific Ocean, from Vietnam to San Diego, the guard's Alaska district said in a release.

This could be YOUR garage! Friends don’t let friends park fire hazards in their garage. OR on transport ships.

If it sinks, will the ocean put out the fire?

Lithium-ion batteries can burn under water as many fire department have found out.
Some EV’s have burned for hours but hosing them makes a nice steam cloud.

Does halon put out the fire? Maybe boron or graphite?

From the first article..

"Consumers using products with such batteries should watch for signs like high heat or swelling of the product frame..."

Or, flames licking up your wall.

Powdered magnesium is the only thing that will extinguish a lithium battery fire.

Extended family have a Chevy Volt with a dead battery. If there was no warranty (there is this time) the dealer quoted the battery price at $30,000.

What makes this story relevant to the original article above is that the Volt battery is on back order......and it has been 5 months! I hope that the Volt battery is not on the burning ship. The Chevy dealer is providing a gasoline-powered SUV rental all these months. The Volt owners plan to sell the Volt as soon as the battery arrives and is installed. I guess driving a gasoline-powered SUV all these months has opened their eyes. We see each other at holidays and birthdays. I told them our experience of driving from Sacramento to Denver and back last year. There are huuuuge stretches of road with amazing vistas. I started keeping track during these long stretches, and did not see even one EV. My two favorites are the Great Salt Lake Basin, and much of Wyoming. If I were stuck with an EV, I would place a Honda generator in the trunk, and extra gasoline.
